Why is Ruby's prime? method so terribly slow?

+Philip Rossi Project Euler problems (http://www.projecteuler.net).  I replaced Prime::prime? with a way more efficient method that I found online and it knocked the execution time of my current problem down from ~50s to ~2s.

Skinning the Chrome Developer Tools Revisited - 11+ themes now available

Back in 2011, +Darcy Clarke  wrote a kick-ass post about how to skin the Chrome Developer Tools with your own custom stylesheet. The basic idea was to locate Chrome's user stylesheet directory then drop-in your own Custom.css file.

A few of you wrote in after noticing our custom-themed DevTools on the Breakpoint, so I thought I'd remind you about Darcy's post (http://darcyclarke.me/design/skin-your-chrome-inspector/) and share a whole bunch of themes written over the past year. Some of them include further theming to the console, icons and other panels.

DevTools Themes:

* MNML Theme: https://github.com/frontdevDE/mnml-devtools-theme
(pictured. also themes Elements panel, headers/bars, console and more.) by +Michael P. Pfeiffer
* Monokai Dark: https://gist.github.com/bc12d6bb85ffb96042e8 (also pictured)
* Tomorrow Theme: https://gist.github.com/1163300 (one of many by the awesome +Benjamin Truyman)
* IR_Black Theme: https://gist.github.com/1150520
(and with sidebar colors: https://gist.github.com/1245727)
* Solarized Dark https://gist.github.com/2174604 by +François Robichet
* Ruby Blue: https://github.com/chrisbateman/ChromeDevToolsTheme-RubyBlue/
* Expresso: https://gist.github.com/1207219
* Inversion: https://github.com/mohsen1/Chrome-Dev-tools-dark-theme
* Dark Theme: https://github.com/xajler/chrome-devtools-dark-theme
* Dark Dev: https://github.com/simonsmith/DarkDev
* WebLight Theme: https://gist.github.com/1325072

Some tips:
* You can tweak your skin for the DevTools using the DevTools themselves by undocking them then hitting Ctrl-Alt-i or Cmd+alt+i on Mac. DevToolsCeption!
* We expose the classes/IDs you can theme via chrome-devtools:devtools/devTools.css

Not only exciting, but probably the best "layman's" explanation of the Higg's Boson that I've come across:

The most important particle physics conference in over 30 years begins later this week in Grenoble. Last year, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) began operation in Geneva. The initial run in 2010 went w...

I've played around with this deck a bunch (replacing an Argent Commander w/ Leeroy) with a pretty high success rate. I'm curious if this wasn't a budget deck what other more "expensive" cards you'd swap in, if any?

+Vladimir Bulatov does it again!  At each moment, this movie shows you a tiling of the hyperbolic plane by pentagons, four meeting at each corner, mapped onto a disc with four slits cut out.  This mapping is conformal, meaning that it preserves angles.  As time passes, the hyperbolic plane rotates and we see this crazy movie.

For a more detailed explanation, with tons of great pictures, go here: http://bulatov.org/math/1001/

Here's the short version: there's a way to measure distances on a disk that makes it into a model of the hyperbolic plane.  There are actually a number of ways, but Bulatov - and Escher - use the Poincare disk model, because in this model straight lines look like portions of circles: very pretty.  Then, according to the Riemann mapping theorem you can map this disk in a conformal way onto a disk with 4 slits cut out.  The hard part is finding a formula for how to do it, and then implementing it on a computer.

For more details, try these picture-packed pages:

Have you ever thought about trying to find the Higg's Boson, only to be deterred by your lack of Large Hadron Colliders? Well here's your chance to help find the illustrious "god" particle - by joining up at LHC@home 2.0! Use your desktop's untapped power to run some collision simulations, no big deal. I'm cross-posting this, so screw off if you've seen it already.

+Philip Rossi Basically what's happening is, researchers at CERN need simulations to compare to actual data from the LHC, in an effort to (hopefully) find discrepancies. Since the amount of simulations needed to be done are so vast, they are imploring you and others to assist in the effort by "donating" some of your computer power. Your computer will run some simulations and then send the data to a centralized db. It's akin to seti@home.
