Random Friday read. Pretty interesting exploration of an issue all to familiar to those living and working in Silicon Valley.
The stunted lives of the foreign tech workers who power our half-trillion-dollar local economy.

I'm pretty impressed with this app to manage kid screen time. It is an annual cost but the polish and functionality are exactly what I'm looking for. There are some missing obvious features but there seems a promise to improve those areas.

And even though they charge they have the best clarification statement I've seen for a family app... "Our plans are per family, not per child. We got your procreation covered!"

Not a silver bullet on keeping screentime in check but a good start I'm willing to pay for.
Screen Time is a parental control app that lets you manage the time your ki...

Memory and tragedy collide and events become seared in our brains. I was spared seeing the fate of the Challenger astronauts live on TV 30 years ago today, but even still I can tell you the exact moment and location (see the map) I learned of that day's events minutes after the disaster.

Walking through the open floor plan of the then Warren Middle School, now an elementary school in Vicksburg Mississippi, a student and teacher with white faces stopped me and told me the news. At first I scoffed that it was a joke only to realize it wasn't by their looks.

More recently, starting in 2009, my fate and memory became tied to another shuttle. This time it was a happier memory of getting to see the Endeavor launch. A life long dream made even more awesome that I shared it with my son. A few years later on that same shuttle's farewell tour, I saw it a second time flying on the back of a plane on it's way to Los Angeles. And then finally over New Years I got to get in near touching distance to that same shuttle homed at the LA Science Center.

It was both sad and joy that while on that museum tour I realized that the Endeavor still lead me back to the Challenger. You see, the Endeavor was commissioned after the Challenger disaster. And it is this memory that is today stuck in my throat.

God speed Francis R. Scobee (Commander), Michael J. Smith (Pilot), Ronald McNair (Mission Specialist), Ellison Onizuka (Mission Specialist), Judith Resnik (Mission Specialist), Gregory Jarvis (Payload Specialist), Christa McAuliffe (Payload Specialist and the bravest damn teacher to every take on the job). Your ghosts are welcome in my memory for as long as you wanna stay.

Stumbled upon this classic but well used (used well?) Chevrolet classic complete with plywood floorboards. Can't help but think of my grandfather's own all be it a different year - a newer old model so to speak. Here for to this will be know as Pawpaw Orange.

After a measured recovery, today marks the first full week of commuting by bike post shoulder surgery. There was a mist of rain earlier in the week, some windy weather, meeting fam obligation, and the coldest morning ride of the season (38 degrees).

All that to get to this morning when I was rewarded with a glowing clear sunrise. I'm lucky to have had good PT and trainer, I'm lucky that the surgery went well, I'm lucky to have been patient through it all. Yep. Feels good.

<technically I gotta ride home this afternoon/evening but I'm gonna go ahead and tempt fate and declare victory now... also more convenient for my blog-tweeting>

This certainly sounds like a positive move. Anyone have a link to the full list of proposed reforms/recommendations?

The recommendations include ways to defuse volatile encounters and sidestep violence, document and track the use of force, and, ultimately, restore trust in communities.

"Can Trump, who was a nationally renowned figure before he entered the race, really be placed in the same category as Carter? Maybe."

Now that's a zinger. A long worthwhile read.
“The Party Decides,” the 2008 book by the political scientists Marty Cohen, David Karol, Hans Noel and John Zaller, has probably been both the most-cited and the most-maligned book of this election…

Just when you thought things couldn't get more crazy in this election. I'm curious to see the numbers but I have to believe this has more affect on the Dems race than GOP.

"It’s not [Trump's] continued presence in the race that surprises me so much as the lack of a concerted effort to stop him." - Nate Silver

Interesting update of the GOP race.

In a nomination race like the Republican one, you could draw up a list of reasons to be skeptical of any candidate’s chances. Here are some reasons to be skeptical about Ted Cruz’s position in Iowa…
