I did not exactly read your mind. My main bike has an Automatix hub and I love it. So I throw that solution at ANY bike-design/-modification problem that I encounter ;)

I had a look at the Schlumpf too. But it's just to costly for me and the jump between gears is just to high to be a standalone solution (EDIT: with "standalone" I mean "without at least 3 or 4 gears in your rear hub"). Besides: I don't know how the Velocino really feels but judging from what I saw in videos I don't think I'd be to confident to use the Schlumpf heel shift on it. Just guessing here...
You might want to look into the Efneo gearbox ( http://www.efneo.com/gearbox ). It's manual shift but you get 3 more reasonably spaced gears at a lower price. I'd love to combine it with my Automatix one day...
And I think, it matches the design of the Velocino much better that the Schlumpf drive

The handlebars are tricky. Again judging from the videos you might want a little more knee-clearance (as you describe in your blog post too). But I guess anything more in the direction of a high-riser makes under-seat steering impracticable (since it then becomes a "low-diver")

Sigh Google. Look. The double-click was the worst UI invention ever. The web finally, after some time, taught a whole new generation to single click (unlike their parents who still mostly double-click on everything, just in case). And now double-click is the major feature in the new version of Drive? Regressive or what?
