I don't think this will go anywhere, but it is getting my mind off of some things and I like playing around with this kind of stuff.

So, today I started messing around with SquareSpace. I was thinking about the blog section and started realizing that I buy a lot of things that are cost effective and well, just work. I'm going to try to post consistently and still have half dozen more posts to do just to get some of the photo stuff I have been playing with on there. These are not in depth reviews, as you can get them all over the web. These are simple does it work or not? Of course, I'll answer questions and all that :o)

If you get a minute, please check it out and I accept constructive feedback extremely well. Right now I'm still struggling on messing with the templates to get it looking the way I want. I think that's going to be the big time sink! Keep in mind, as I write this, the site is only hours old!

This was not a good photo by far. I was just checking to see if my new gear works the other night. I took some shots to test my new triggers and softbox and I realized something.

One thing that I now remember that I had forgotten, is when you increase your shutter speed to darken the ambient light, you are also increasing the the darkness of the shadows on the flash subject. I didn't use a fill or reflector, but now I remember why I have them! I wasn't going for a noir effect on these and I didn't pose him, just had him stand there while I played with my new gear :o)

Soft and diffused light affect highlights/contrast and the transition from light to dark. This is not to be confused with falloff (inverse square rule) or dynamic range. Lowering ambient exposure without fill of some sort gives the photo a look that gives the illusion of hard light.

In this picture, there is a 32 inch softbox about 4 feet away, feathered to stay off the background. I increased the shutter speed to 1/2000th (HSS) and managed to realize, after looking at these that it also made the shadows much darker on the side of the face. Interesting.

I normally don't completely kill the background (it's a curtain on a window and a messy desk) and will use a reflector and/or a rim/hair light or something to light the way I like in a darker environment or studio. This was in the house at night, so I just wanted to kill the ambient warm light and see what the modifier would do all by itself.

Whenever I watch or read a tutorial to brush up, I don't remember this ever being mentioned, so I thought I would. They always cover soft/hard, diffused/specular and some of the more in depth ones will get into falloff and the like, but not this specifically. Something to think about maybe when you're setting up ;o)

Me too. I have been doing this off and on for over 20 years and I learn new stuff every day. This on again with lights, was a big gap, so I have some catching up to do!

Great refresher. I always forget the nuances of the Sharpening and Noise Reduction sections in Lightroom.

I decided to bite the bullet and make a LR catalog of my entire photo drive. It took about 24 hours to do. I was looking through it and found a Seaworld trip from years ago taken with my old Nikon D1x. The RAW files have been LOST for years! It was in a folder that was not named correctly. I thought I only had jpg's. There was a particular photo in there of Dawn Brancheau that I took before she passed and had shared with Seaworld after the incident. I have always wanted to have another go at it, so here it is. Much more detail than my prior edit, especially since I had thought I lost the NEF files and had edited the jpg's. Such a difference.

Anyways, the point is really to remember her and her love for these creatures. We had seen her dozens of times and the kids loved to watch and learn about the animals. What happened was a shame, but she did what she loved. How many of us can say the same?

Another LR tip if you run into into this type of error. Post #4 fixed it for me. It is really for any Adobe product that uses that nasty QT server. I'm running Windows 7.
I have had Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements and LR 4 installed for over a year on my Windows 7 computer. Over the last couple months, within a few

Threw a few more reviews up on the blog. Hopefully, some will find them amusing. I am trying to make them short and sweet with a little bit of dry or raunchy humor.

And so it continues. Ordered 2 more triggers, another speedlight and a few more accessories. Been digging through boxes pulling out brackets and reflectors and whatever I could find that I can use. Hoping to try it out this weekend.

Oh yeah, that's why I stopped. I could get away with 2 to start, but they are expensive! They are great glass though.

Just ordered a softbox, s-type/bowens mount and a couple light stands. Here we go again! I have a studio strobe and some accessories left from before. This time I'm going to start with speedlights to stay portable. I'm regretting selling all my studio strobes, but hey, I love shopping for new gear!

Okay folks. Hopefully save you some time away from Google Search.

If you update your LR CC and it won't start, just open up your Creative Cloud app (updater), click the gear in the upper right corner. Go to preferences, log out and log back in. You may have to restart the app, but then the new LR will open. At least it did in my case.

Just starting to play with it. Looks good so far!

Introduction
Right now I'm going through a renewed interest in photography. In the late 70's, I was active in 35mm through to the beginning of digital, but life started getting hectic and I lost my way for a few years. I'm having to relearn just about everything and that's okay. That's part of what makes it fun!

I casually play guitar and am a bit of a geek. Love cars, especially Corvettes, helicopters and oriental things. My family is my life and I like it like that! I have many other interests, but no where near the time to count them as hobbies, so here I end my shortened bio. That's me in a nutshell.
