Social Media can have a huge effect on education. Students are communicating with people all over the world in a way that has never before been seen in history. This is mainly do to the growth of new social media communication tools.
I investigate methods to utilize these new tools and look for interesting ways to incorporate these in the classroom.
Bruce Hopkins is an accomplished IT Professional. He has worked on projects such as DotNetNuke and numerous private individual projects. For the most part he is a geek. He got his first computer in 1986 and has never lost his amazement of what all the impact technology has on shaping society especially education.
I'm just here to learn from others and hopefully be able to share my knowledge I've learned over the past 20 years since I decided to make my profession The support of IT equipment for other companies. The past 15 have been in an educational environment. I've worked as the technical direction taken at several small Technical Colleges and I've seen what impact technology can have on the success or failure of average students.
But those are not average students they are ever bit as deserving of a quality education. Even though most in college would consider me a staff member at the Director Level does not mean I'm not an educator. Its the faculty's job to provide the education its my responsibility to figure out new and interesting ways to deliver that technology in any format where the student can effectively consume that content.
*Warning Potential Rant Follows:*
Money is always tight at schools so the deliverer of that technology must be economical as well as state of the art to really do the job. Since money is tight very few of institutions adequately fund their IT Departments effectively. They look at their technology as a burden a necessary beast. That sad thing is if they would fund technology for just a few years and spend on the right projects, then they can make a difference so many other areas of the college and receive enhanced efficiency in areas such as student services where long lines can be decreased. Or the time from receipt of student application to student sitting in the seat decreased because of inefficiencies in the process. Technology can help to stream line the tasks involved.
I'm here to learn from peers in the educational field.
