Jeff Hawkins is one of my #AI heros, looking forward to listening to this one.

Finally! A well-reasoned article (by Michael Chorost) on why  superintelligent AI won't kill us all if it has no emotion/sensation, and why it won't kill us all if it does have emotion/sensation.  #ai #artificialintelligence

The problem here is that Google doesn't have enough data about how some drivers of transit buses behave. I'm sure we've all experienced the bus that refuses to yield.

"Google said its computers have reviewed the incident and engineers changed the software that governs the cars to understand that buses may not be as inclined to yield as other vehicles." (Translation: bus drivers can be assholes).

Here's an example of the AI FUD I'm talking about: Werner Herzog's new documentary , whose trailer includes this unbelievable quote by some so-called expert:

"I cannot only imagine artificial intelligence evolving spontaneously on the Internet, but I can't tell you that it hasn't happened already."

There's no science-based hypothesis to explain how AI could evolve on the Internet, so claiming it's "possible" because you can imagine it is just silliness.

"I cannot only imagine dragons evolving spontaneously in the air, but I can't tell you that it hasn't happened already."

I'm also disappointed to see actual AI expert Sebastian Thrun quoted in this trailer talking about not wanting a fridge that falls in love with a stove.  I expect (or hope) Herzog is taking the quote out of context.

Yup. There was absolutely no cause to spread FUD about AI.  I still see AI silliness out there.

"It is deeply unfortunately that luminaries such as Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking have contributed to feverish hand-wringing about a looming artificial intelligence apocalypse," says ITIF President Robert D. Atkinson.

"Do we think either of them personally are Luddites? No, of course not. They are pioneers of science and technology. But they and others have done a disservice to the public - and have unquestionably given aid and comfort to an increasingly pervasive neo-Luddite impulse in society today - by demonising AI in the popular imagination."

This is a good debunking of the hype around deep learning vs. how our brains actually work.  Here's my example:  while a child's brain only needs to see a few cats before being able to recognize all cats,  the "Google Brain" project required a cluster of 16,000 computers to review 10 million digital images of cats before it could recognize a cat -- and even so, only achieved 75% accuracy.

I voted for the AI alarmist crowd -- which includes Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates. Brilliant minds yes, but not AI experts, and the media's coverage of their overstated and unsubstantiated views of AI is a perfect example of the "appeal to authority" logical fallacy.
