Dr. Richards and Dr. Hurd just prior to setting out to hike a 30 mile section of the Mahican-Mohawk Trail for the Mass/RI Make-A-Wish Foundation!

Bristol County Veterinary Hospital would like to thank everyone for their well wishes and support as our own Dr. Hurd and Dr. Richards hiked a 30 mile length of the Mahican-Mohawk Trail to help raise funds for the Mass/RI Make-A-Wish Foundation via the Trailblaze Challenge 2016. Your donations and words of encouragement made all the difference, and we're so honored to have been able to help such a wonderful organization.

As some of you know, Dr. Richards’ children have a genetic disease, and her oldest has had other life threatening complications as well. At the age of 16, her daughter Karen Richards has had 20 surgeries, half of which have involved the brain, spine, or vasculature in her brain. When Dr. Richards is absent from work, it is not for vacation or to relax, it is usually to travel with her daughter to surgeons in the Washington DC and Virginia area who specialize in these conditions. To keep Dr. Richards’ spirits up she relies on the staff at BCVH, her furry patients, and you, our clients.

Three years ago her daughter applied to “Make-A-Wish” for a wish. She was granted one, and chose to travel to London for a shopping spree along with her whole family. For one week she was a kid, and Dr. Richards was a “normal” mom on a fabulous vacation, not worrying about surgeries, medicine, hospitalizations, etc. This one small wish has lasted a lifetime for them, and “Make a Wish” does this for 380 children in the Massachusetts/Rhode Island area every year.

Therefore, when Dr. Hurd and Dr. Richards were both told by their physicians to do something active for their own health, and Dr. Richards received an email about a hike to benefit “Make-A-Wish,”, a plan was formed. The two decided to not only do something active, but to strive to do something crazy like walking 30 miles in one day AND to benefit other families by supporting “Make A Wish.”

Thank you again for your support, your donations, and your words of encouragement. Our doctors made it back from the trail in one piece, and described the experience as one they'll never forget!
