Half of the Super Bowl commercials mentioned Twitter. (Most companies were just begging for you to tweet about their ad.) But no mention of Google+ in any commercial. Is this just not the place to talk about live events?

not yet. Twitter is big in mainstream media. 
Frankly nobody should blindly trust any app. That's what happens when malware gets into ios. Lots of people get it because everybody just assumes they can't get it. Do yourself a favor and run anti-malware apps like Lookout.
The advantage of Twitter is its forced brevity.  That makes it good for time-crunched ads to focus-lacking viewers.

Oh, and out of curiosity, how many commercials mentioned Facebook?
