Google’s latest app rides the trend of post-editing the focus of photos, Eyefi adds Cloud service to sync camera pics, and the Project Ara smartphone may snap in place by January. (And somehow I found a way to sneak The Simpsons into today's roundup!)

+Earl Small It's about having a shallow depth of field. It's a style used in photography (yes, even by professionals) to bring more focus to your subject. In fact, there are plenty of people who spend good money on lenses for DSLRs to get this effect.

If it's such a gimmick, why is it used in photos for renowned magazines like Time and National Geographic? Are you saying that the general public shouldn't want to take pictures like the pros? Having seen some of the garbage that gets posted online, I for one am glad these companies are doing their best to help people take better photos.

P.S. It's a free app. Nobody is wasting any money on it.

The Amazon Dash wand is cool, but it's only for a few folks on in Seattle and California that spend $300 a year on Amazon Fresh. But this idea could spark change in other grocery stores. Today's Update explains the Dash and other grocery-scanning apps. Plus, learn about the Google Glass Livestream app: http://cnet.co/1kkn8q2

Some men just want to watch the XP world burn. In today's tech-news roundup:  Comixology joins forces with Amazon, Google to open up sales for Glass, the Vaio Fit 11A is too hot to handle, and Microsoft wants you to kiss Windows XP goodbye in the humorous “Escape from XP.”

This "wave" of the future isn't working. Google-owned Nest stops selling its $130 smoke detector over a safety glitch because of the motion sensor. But customers on Amazon have been complaining about all sorts of other problems.

+Bridget Carey, for weeks now I haven't been able to get my rss feed to pull the videos from Cnet like this one. Going to the site doesn't show any different url than I'm using. Has something changed?
