An original Christmas Tree? Legend has it that the idea of lights on a Christmas tree originated with Martin Luther who saw the stars through the boughs of an evergreen tree. To show his family, he cut down a small tree, carried it home, and placed small candles upon the tree to simulate the effect of starlight streaming through the branches of an evergreen. At least that’s the legend.

A fascinating study of what make the Looney Tunes cartoons so enduring... and some great highlight clips too.
How the inventive absurdity of ‘Looney Tunes’ emerged from discipline and a commitment to understanding human behaviour

Aurora Alert - Big Solar Flare on the Way

The big sunspot group AR2158, which is crossing the Sun's face this week, let loose with gigantic flare on Wednesday, September 10 aimed directly at Earth. The charged particles from the flare are on the way, and space meteorologist are calling for auroral activity on Thursday and Friday nights. So look up if you have clear sky. The aurorae will be stronger closer to the poles, but if you're north of 40N latitude or south of 40S latitude, you'll have a better chance of seeing something.  The video shows the flare in action...

Canola Flowers, near Estevan, Saskatchewan

In early July 2015. I just pulled over and pointed the camera out the window. The prairies are surprisingly photogenic!

Our stay in Vicenza surpassed expectations. La Corte Segreta is clean, quiet and tastefully decorated. Although the main accommodation is a bachelor-type suite that has a bed and a sofa bed, we also booked the extra bedroom, which made for more comfortable sleeping arrangements for the four of us. There is a small balcony in each room, and this gives you a wonderful sense of a lush green garden around you. The apartment is well-located - a 15 minute walk to the centre (shopping and restaurants) and also to a lovely park (great for a morning jog!) It is also a good base for exploring other cities in the area (Venice, Verona). However, the best part of this place is the hosts. Francesco and Allesandra are a charming couple that made us feel like old friends. They were extremely helpful - meeting us at the highway exit to guide us to the apartment, helping us with arranging train travel to Venice, and walking with us to the centre and pointing out historical points of interest as well as restaurant recommendations. We highly recommend this place!
