"Tricks and treachery are the practice of fools, that don't have brains enough to be honest." - Benjamin Franklin

Dirty tricks are a part of politics. Why do otherwise smart and responsible people suddenly think to themselves "Oh, I know what we can do..."? I guess part of it is that they sometimes work, and the other part is some weird self-reinforcing group think that happens on campaigns.

The CPC got caught doing something stupid this past week, and we have seen that other dirty tricks they have tried in the past keep blowing up on them (Sona trying to steal a ballot box, the fraudulent robocalls, Del Mastro's overspending, etc.).

I'm pretty sure the NDP was lining up JT and the LPC for a big, huge, whopping dirty trick, but miscalculated JT's character and resolve a wee bit.

I don't like dirty tricks on campaigns. Many who have worked on a campaign with me will know remember the humorless "no" that escapes my lips even when people are joking about dirty tricks. To me, they represent an unnecessary risk - and joking can too quickly become self-reinforcing group think. Yes, they may sometimes work, but when they don't it tends to go very badly for whichever volunteer, staffer or candidate gets thrown under the bus. Somehow people always manage to convince themselves that the risk outweighs the reward somehow.

I posted on Facebook the other day about resisting the pressure to break the law as a campaign staffer. I'd resist the pressure to do dirty tricks too. It just isn't worth it.

I'll leave with a quote from Colm Keaveney:

"Discipline and unconditional support is earned by understanding and trust and inclusion. Not by isolation, not by nasty tricks."

At the end of the day, a straight up, honest campaign will win more hearts and minds than dirty tricks ever will.

After spending the last few days reading +Kady O'Malley's tweets on the C-36 hearing, I just had to write something.
