Columbia, TN dental implants are the first and best choice for tooth replacement.
Dental implants, placed by Brian Fann DDS at The Art of Dentistry in Columbia, Tennessee, are the surest and most natural-looking way to replace one or more missing teeth. Comprised of a metal screw and porcelain crown, dental implants blend into the jawbone, forming stable foundations for  prosthetic teeth.
Replace one or more missing teeth with Columbia Dental Implants.
Dentists agree that gaps in your smile harm your dental health and your overall well-being, too. Tooth loss leads to gum and jawbone recession at the empty tooth socket, causing surrounding teeth to drift and even loosen over time.  In addition, loss of multiple teeth causes sagging facial features and  problems with biting, chewing and speech clarity.
Enter tooth replacement with dental implants. Gaining immense popularity with dental practitioners, such as Brian Fann DDS at The Art of Dentistry, and their patients, dental implants are permanent, stable and natural-looking prosthetics---so life-like, in fact, that recipients claim they look, feel and function just like the real thing.
How do Columbia dental implants work?
Dental implants are made up of a titanium screw surgically-placed into the patient’s jawbone with benefit of local anesthesia. While it’s true that the jaw bone must be wide and dense enough to hold this anchor, the jaw can be augmented with donor tissue or bone paste if necessary.
The gums heal over the implant over the next several weeks. In the next phase of the procedure, Dr. Fann places an abutment or post onto the implant and then cements a custom-fitted porcelain crown to finish the restoration.
An amazing natural process called osseointegration makes the implant strong and durable. The titanium metal which forms the implant has a tremendous affinity for natural bone, and as such, the implant completely integrates with the jaw.
According to the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, dental implants have an success rate of about 95 percent or more and also work well to support multiple teeth or full arches of fixed or removable dentures. Dr. Finn will perform a thorough oral exam with imaging and discuss treatment options with patients before determining that implants are the correct treatment.
Aftercare of Columbia dental implants is critical.
After placement of an implant, the patient feels some minimal discomfort which he or she can control with over the counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen. The patient should eat softer foods for a few days, and after the restoration is complete, biting very hard food such as ice or peanut brittle should be avoided. No implant patient should resume smoking.
Just as twice daily brushing and once a day flossing promotes the health of teeth and gums, disciplined oral hygiene preserves the integrity and function of dental implants. While complications are rare, poor hygiene causes an infection called peri-implantitis in which bone and gum recede to the point that the implant may be removed. Dr. Fann encourages regular dental check-ups and cleanings for all teeth--natural or replacement.

Dental Implants from Dr. Brian Fann in Columbia, TN
If you have missing teeth and are tired of the daily difficulties you may be dealing with such as chewing, talking, smiling and laughing—or if you have dentures that are uncomfortable and slip—then you may want to consider dental implants. When it comes to tooth restoration, dental implants are probably the strongest and the most lifelike currently available. At The Art of Dentistry in Columbia, TN, Dr. Brian Fann can restore your smile and your confidence with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants consist of two parts: the implant, which acts as the replacement for your missing tooth root, and a crown, the replacement for that portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line. In most cases, the “root” is a titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jaw bone beneath the open socket of your missing tooth. Once Dr. Fann completes the implant procedure, the post and your surrounding bone tissue begin to fuse together in a process called osseointegration. As such, you have a firm foundation and you avoid the possibility of bone deterioration and facial sagging, which can happen when your tooth is missing for a long time.

Once you’ve completely healed—usually in three to six months—you’ll return to Dr. Fann for him to attach an abutment and permanent crown to the post. Once this procedure is completed, you’ll have a new tooth replacement that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.

Dental Implants for Fixed Dentures

Dental implants can also be strategically placed along an arch to securely hold a partial or full denture in place. For people who are missing most if not all of their teeth, this can be a more comfortable option than removable dentures.

Orthodontics from The Art of Dentistry in Columbia, TN

As a general dentist, Dr. Brian Fann with The Art of Dentistry in Columbia, TN, offers a complete menu of preventive, restorative and cosmetic dental services. But did you know that Dr. Fann is also an Associate Fellow in the Academy of Gp Orthodontics? So, when you consult with your dentist about whether or not you or another member of your family should have braces, you’ll also be consulting with your orthodontist! Could anything be more convenient? Well, yes—Dr. Fann offers both traditional orthodontics, Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles®.

Traditional Orthodontics

Traditional orthodontics, more commonly known as braces, are comprised of brackets and arch wires, as well as elastic ties that hold the arch wires in place along the brackets. Today, brackets are made of metal, ceramic, composite or a combination of these materials. And elastics come in a rainbow of colors, which have become a fashion statement among young wearers who want to sport their school colors or a favorite team.

Arch wires are attached to the brackets and apply continuous pressure to the teeth in order to move them in to position. Like brackets, arch wires are now made of new materials that help move teeth and hidden roots more quickly and with less discomfort.

If you’d prefer to straighten your teeth discreetly rather than with a mouthful of color, then Dr. Fann also offers Invisalign. With this system, clear plastic aligners gradually move your teeth in to place. The Invisalign aligners are arranged in a series of sets, one for your upper arch of teeth and one for the lower. You’ll wear each set for about two weeks, removing them when you want to eat or brush and floss your teeth. As you progress through the series, you’ll see your teeth go from crooked to straight. In about one year, the treatment will be complete and you’ll have a straight and beautiful smile.

Six Month Smiles®

Six Month Smiles uses clear brackets and tooth-colored arch wires to straighten your teeth almost imperceptibly. This system uses the same mechanics as traditional orthodontics, but because the emphasis is only on the teeth in your smile zone—and only on the position of those teeth and not your overall bite—the treatment can be completed much more quickly.

Don’t Worry! Sedation Dentistry is here in Columbia, TN

If you or a family member is one of those people who gets nervous about going to the dentist, you can relax. First of all, you’re not the only one; millions of Americans cannot bring themselves to go to the dentist because they are too afraid. Secondly and believe it or not, there is something your dentist can do about your fear. Sedation dentistry can help you relax and be anxiety-free for any dental procedure. Dr. Brian Fann and his staff in Columbia, TN, have helped many patients with sedation dentistry and they can help you, too.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are several types of sedation dentistry. Dr. Fann offers nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, is administered through a nose mask. You’ll inhale a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide and before you know it, you’ll feel relaxed and completely at ease. And while nitrous oxide may elevate your pain threshold, there are still procedures that may require a local anesthetic. Once your dental procedure is completed, the mask will be removed and in a matter of minutes the nitrous oxide will be out of your system and you’ll feel like yourself again.

With oral conscious sedation, Dr. Fann prescribes a mild sedative or anti-anxiety medication that you’ll take one hour prior to your treatment. A word of caution: oral conscious sedation necessitates your having a friend or family member drive you to your appointment and accompany you home. Dr. Fann's team monitors your vital signs constantly during your procedure and you are never left alone. You’ll be awake enough to respond to Dr. Fann during your treatment, but you may not remember anything afterward. In fact, a treatment that actually takes a couple of hours may only feel like a couple of minutes to you.

Dr. Fann is also qualified to use IV sedation. As with oral conscious sedation, your vital signs are monitored throughout a procedure. And while patients often feel as if they slept through their procedures, Dr. Fann and his team are able to converse with you, but you may not recall this once the IV sedation stops.

Dental Implants Restore Smiles and More in Columbia, TN
Believe it or not, if you are missing one or more teeth, that gaping hole in your smile is the least of your worries. Even one missing tooth can lead to difficulty chewing and speaking; gum disease; bone loss; and shifting teeth that cause a misaligned bite; to say nothing of the consequences to your self-confidence. Fortunately, there is a solution for all of these problems. Dental implants emulate natural teeth more closely than any other tooth replacement. And The Art of Dentistry provides strong and lifelike dental implants for people in Columbia, TN, and beyond.

You may be missing one or more teeth for a variety of reasons: tooth decay, traumatic injury, extreme wear and tear, gum disease, a failed root canal, or congenital irregularities. Regardless of the reason, Dr. Brian Fann at The Art of Dentistry is ready to replace your missing teeth with dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent and irremovable restorations that replace both the root and crown of a missing tooth. And therein lies the beauty of dental implants. By replacing not only the crown of a tooth but also the root, you reduce your chances of gum disease, bone loss and an improper bite. This new “root” is actually a titanium post that Dr. Fann surgically places in the bone beneath the socket of a missing tooth. After some healing time, the post becomes anchored in the bone. Then, Dr. Fann places a custom crown on top of the implant, giving you a natural-looking smile.
If you happen to be missing more than one tooth, Dr. Fann can strategically place implants along the arch to securely hold a full or partial denture in place. Either way, you end up with a beautiful smile and a healthier mouth.
