From what I can tell, it's risky for a Penguin sufferer to 301 to a new domain. Is that your experience- sometimes it works, sometimes it just transfers on to the new site?

There was a recent Google Hangout about this. Here is the recap (lifted from +Steve Martin)

Does Forwarding from a Penalized Domain to a New One Reset a Penalty? If you try to kill your domain that was hit by Penguin and you create a new domain and forward everything over that they will "help" by automatically setting a 301 redirect. So they look at old site information and forward all the signals, good or bad to the new site. They have 2 indexes one is the historical index and the ranking index to compare and make a decision based on the mined data.

"They don't want spammers to get away with cloning sites" John Mueller said.

They keep a changelog and can tell if you are maintaining the pages. They could figure out that these are all the same and that you are trying to manipulate the SERPS.

It’s 2014, and social media has grown up. For each company, it lives within an integrative advertising, marketing & PR funnel that involves websites, owned media lists and social accounts. Social media is measurable and there are many case studies documenting the varied results for many different social marketing approaches.

One of the newest such strategies, but one that has been proven out by dozens of companies including Marketo, Hubspot, InfiniGraph and Nanigans, is Facebook Ad Lead Gen, which uses Facebook advertising (almost always) and Facebook posts (sometimes).

We’ve been involved in about a half dozen of these projects in the last year, and have found some things that work and some things that don’t- but most importantly I’ve been impressed by the results, and this is a valid strategy that doesn’t get much attention, so I decided to do a webinar recently for Instant E-Training on this topic, and out of that build this free ebook.
