Just witnessed a hit and run!
So, I'm driving home, when I see 2 cars collide. A Toyota Corolla hit a white SUV on the driver side. A standard T-Bone collision, both drivers maintained control of the vehicle, the corolla finds a safe place to pull over, the SUV speeds up and pulls into a driveway out of sight from the scene.
I park my car at my place, half a block from the scene, grab my handheld HAM Radio, and walk back over. As I'm walking, I see the young black guy from the SUV, flagging someone down, my first thought was the police....See, I successfully subdued my first racist instinct....but, wait, no, he called his friends! A minivan pulls in, and a white girl and black guy jump out, they start stuffing the exploded airbag away, and talking really fast "I don't see him down there, let's get out of here!" At this point I'm calm and cool, but livid inside...how can you not have concern for human life. I glance down at the SUV's licence plate and memorize it!!!!
As I walk away, I glance back, and see the minivan and SUV speed off away from the scene. I walk up to the corner where the accident happened and look for the Toyota, I see him parked at the next block. I walk over and see the Mexican about my age, sitting still, trying to call someone. I ask him if he's ok, he says he is, I believe him, his airbags both deployed. I ask him if he called the police, he says no. I asked him if he wanted me to call the police for him, he declines, but as soon as I told him what I just saw, he agreed.
So I call 911, and tell the operator everything, after about 5 minutes on the phone, the Mexican tells me he would like to leave, his car is running and he's walking around and talking alright, so I tell the police operator the driver would like to leave. The operator states he needs to either send a squad car, or talk to the driver to get the report filed. I tell the driver, who tells me in rough english "I no speak english good" and I explain to the operator he'd need a translator. So he gets the translator, and I let him talk on the phone, five minutes later he hands the phone back, and I confirm everything is good with the operator.
The driver shakes my hand saying "thank you!" and we go our separate ways.
I'm not telling you this because I want your appreciation. I'm telling you this so you know, there are people that care, don't look for them, they'll find you when they are needed. And these same people might be the most dangerous person you can imagine, so don't think for one moment you can get away with being an asshole.....I know where you live SUV, and if you're smart, you'll turn yourself in! It wasn't your fault....but it became your fault the moment you left the scene!
