In news just now breaking over Twitter and other social media platforms, Stone Temple Pilot frontman Scott Weiland has passed away, found dead on his tour bus by his manager. At this early stage cause of death is unknown. Well known and highly respected for his virtuosic – and adventurous – vocal prowess, Weiland was the primary driving force behind the wild success of Stone Temple Pilots, a band he fronted during two separate stints, the first a...

Unless we’re wildly off the mark, it looks as though Blur are set to release a new album. The legendary London band have made some specifically cryptic moves in the last 24 hours that can mean only one thing: new music is forthcoming. This morning the Sun posted a picture of a neon ice-cream cone alongside some Chinese characters. How did that help us conclude the follow-up to the 2003’s Think Tank is on the way? Follow this math: 1. Blur were ru...

When I interviewed Peter Hook on a snowy day in Chicago in February 2013, he told me that when he had to learn Ian Curtis’ lyrics to perform Joy Division songs with The Light, he consulted the internet – and what he found there, he said, was “wrong” in many cases. “Ian would never had said that,” Hooky claimed, referring to the lyrics that appeared at many sites. After reading Ian’s So This Is Permanence: Joy Division Lyrics and Notebooks (Chroni...

Morning coffee? Who needs it? 5-hour ENERGY? Why bother? All you have to do is play Wet Socks’ Drips – the band’s high-octane, garage-punk manifesto of an LP – and you’ll have all the energy that you need to jump start your body, challenge your mind, and feel that the essence of rock and roll is in good hands. These hands belong to a duo of musicians from Savannah, GA – vocalist, guitar virtuoso, and multi-instrumentalist Hunter Jayne and master ...

Mission accomplished. Susan Fast’s new monograph on Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album is an utterly compelling, utterly intelligent reassessment of Jackson’s oft-maligned record of 1991 and a challenge to anyone who thinks that they have a grasp on…

Written by: Alex Green. Stereo Embers' Single Of The Week comes from Kimm Rogers. Taken from her upcoming October release Where The Pavement Grows, “Rain” is a stirring folk number played with finesse and heart. Rogers' voice falls somewhere between Iris DeMent and Patty Griffin but her phrasing ...

When the British poet Lord Byron published the first two cantos of his narrative poem, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, in 1812, he arguably became the world’s first celebrity. The poem, which chronicled the European and Middle Eastern travels of a weary and melancholic young man, was an instant sensation in London. A cult of celebrity soon formed around Byron, and readers began tracing his every step, seeking any form of personal contact with the man...

Peter Hook’s bass playing and writing share a common quality that should come as no surprise to anyone who’s listened to his music or read his books – and that quality is intimacy. Whether Hooky’s playing one of his magnificent basslines for Joy Division, New Order, or The Light or writing in his inimitable prose style, he brings you close to his heart and soul. Hooky’s iconic bass work covers a wide range his emotions – from melancholy to aggres...

In what’s fast becoming a Stereo Embers tradition if not a bloody institution, we offer you our third installment in this popular series that seems to promise limitless sequels spilling out over the horizon with nary a diminishing return in sight. Once again we traverse oceans and trespass borders to bring you a rather dazzling spectrum of bands exhibiting an adventurous range of styles and approaches to a genre of music that first emerged from t...

Here's a little write up on a recent talk Henry Rollins did in the DC area.
Tuesday night, October 14, 2014, a packed crowd listened to DC’s native son, Henry Rollins (aka Garfield). He shared his insights about the DC punk rock scene in the early 80s, where he played an integral part. I’m sad I was too young to experience it! Rollins spoke at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s …

Contrary to published reports and rumors, this will not be AC/DC’s last album. 5. Malcolm Young’s illness has not been made public, however one thing that has been made clear by AC/DC is that d...

I was very happy to have another sushi place open up in the Uptown area and am a frequent visitor of this location. The staff is very friendly and I am very happy with the quality of the $2.95 rolls. One thing to take into consideration is the $15 minimum order for debit/credit cards. Great food, great service!
