One other very important point that I was remiss for not mentioning in the video. A big part of the appeal for this system is not economical, but environmental. I think the same is generally true of Tesla's cars. It may not be easier on the wallet (at least not yet) but you're powering your home with green energy instead of fossil fuels, and there's a lot to be said for that. The majority of us can't afford it yet, but I'd argue that the planet needs as many green early-adopters as it can get.

+Samuel Wietlispach We have to start somewhere and at this moment lithium is our only option.  Why do you assume that battery technology will not improve?  It would be stupid for Tesla to not be in the market of finding a better battery solution.  I'm just glad we got the right guys on it now!

Thanks to +Matias Duarte for sitting down with us. Really fascinating stuff.
Two years ago, as Google first showed off Android Jelly Bean, we sat down with then-Director of Android User Experience Matias Duarte to discuss where the operating system was heading. Fast forward this week's Google I/O, where Duarte--now Google's Vice President of Design--introduced Material Design. We had the chance, once again, to ask him about Android's latest design gambit, and what it means for Google's future.

Hey guys, Brent Rose here. Just a couple quick notes that we couldn’t squeeze into the video itself:

-So, our calculations for the cost breakdown are based on the absolute best-case scenario. We did this in the interest of being concise and eliminating as many variables as possible. Additional things that would only add time before you break even include: 1. The fact that the batteries only start out at 92% efficiency, and that typically gets worse over time. 2. The fact that you lose even more efficiency when it passes through a DC-AC inverter, 3. Additional costs of installation, maintenance, sales tax, etc. Then again, it’s possible that the government could, at the state or national level, offer incentives to help cut the costs, as they often do with solar panels. Just stuff to consider.

-It's also worth noting that Tesla has open-sourced the patents for these so anyone can use them, which it's also done for its cars, and that's pretty damn cool. By allowing other companies to benefit from the R&D Tesla has done should speed up innovation and competition. Awesome.

-The reason we say we don't see the cost benefit for charging up the battery from the grid during off-peak hours and then running your home off of it during peak hours is because typically the difference in cost between peak vs off-peak is just a few cents per kWh. At that rate it would take you many, many years before you broke even on the batteries. Probably not before the 10 year warranty is up.

Anyway, hopefully this video gave you enough info to to make you feel comfortable engaging in a real life conversation about all of this stuff. Ultimately, my take is that this can only be a very good thing. Even if it isn't necessarily cost-effective for most of us yet, it can only help to drive prices down and put these lofty (but important, and attainable) goals more in reach. -Brent

+Brent Rose First of all, I can tell most of the people commenting here don't have solar panels. I have a brand new home in central Texas with a new 6kw solar panel system (24 panels) on my roof. I have an interconnection agreement with ONCOR (They are the TDSP/Transmission Distribution Service Provider) and the company that sells me my energy (REP or a Retail Electric Provider) buys it back when I create surplus, which happens every day. I pay about 7 cents per kwh, they buy it back at about 5 cents depending on the market. (The price of electricity in Texas changes every 15 minutes although most people have a fixed rate and not a variable rate) See powertochoose.org

My solar system was $12k installed including a device called an e-gauge which plugs into my local network where I can see generation, load, surplus, deficit in real time. Not "tens of thousands of dollars". Also - a DC/AC inverter is included as part of the installation.

Technically with 12k in panels and 12k in Powerwall investment I would not only charge my batteries for free and run my house off batteries but during times where we aren't charging the batteries the solar panels will send the energy back to the grid and we will receive a check and/or credit from our REP at the end of the month.

Your calculations are missing the variable for the buy-back people with solar panels receive from Retail Electric Providers. If the batteries can sustain your energy usage then the panels will offset the return on investment timeframe in your formula.

It's my extreme honor and privilege to offer you the exclusive world premiere of Flynt Flossy and Turquoise Jeep Records' newest banger. You're welcome, world.
Winter is coming. For much of the world, it's already cold, wet, and terrible out there. We need a legit dancehall banger to heat things up. Well, ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes and bodies on this Gizmodo-exclusive world premiere. It's "Sweat On Me," from Flynt Flossy and the crew at Turquoise Jeep Records.

Ouch. It looks like they haven't improved it much from last year's version. Poor dynamic range, horrible low light performance, aggressive JPEG compression, and no OIS. And like last year's Moto X, it manages to take a decent shot every 10 or so images.
