Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Harvard Address -

I’m currently on page 412 of Gulag Archipelago.  It is just fantastic.  On YouTube I’ve discovered his address to Harvard.  Really the speech is so great that you should read it rather than merely hear it, but I can’t resist posting the address itself!

This is a fine 7-11 which is clean and well lit. I always feel safe coming here - even late at night. The staff serve me quickly and with a good degree of friendliness. A great place.

This is a great Krispy Kreme location. There's nothing quite as insanely delicious as a warm glazed coming fresh off the line - just watch for the neon sign. The other doughnuts are fine - but I think I'd have to say that Dunkin' Doughnuts is a little better - and if you're in the neighborhood, check out J's doughnuts which is catty corner to this location across Lovers/Greenville.

This Aldi's location is as fine as any other. You have typically great products which are even cheaper than Walmart - with incredibly fast cashiers. Almost everything in an Aldi's location is generic, so (for example) if you buy corn flakes, it won't say "Kellog's Corn Flakes" on the package, but the contents will taste just as good - and you'll save lots of money every time you shop. My wife and I always visit Aldi's first and buy all we can there, and then we go to Walmart if we must. However, as with all Aldi's locations, remember that you must pay with cash or debit card (because credit cards aren't accepted), and if you don't bring one of those classic fabric shopping bags with you, you'll have to buy a bag there or try to make it out of the store with everything perched in your arms. You'll also need a quarter to get a shopping cart, but you get the quarter back when you return the shopping cart to its place. Of course, all of this helps them save money - savings which they pass along to you. Employees at this location are pleasant and fast. Always a pleasure to stop by!

When I discovered this place, I felt like I had just touched down on a new planet full of exotic flavors and spices which I had never even dreamt of before. They take Mediterranean cuisine to an ENTIRELY different level. First you go through the doors and walk up to the cash register, which is where you order. You can look over the menu, but to me the only choices which make sense are the buffet by itself (which is vegetarian) and the buffet with a meat - which you order there at the register. (As an alternative, you could order another item on the menu, but then you'd miss out on the buffet, which would be crazy - with all that variety you'd pass over.) Assuming you've picked the buffet, you then grab a plate and get busy (and if you've ordered a meat, they give you a number so that they can later deliver your meat to your table). Then the feasting begins! Unbelievable puffy bread which you watch being baked in their brick furnace - and amazing Mediterranean food of every description. The meat choices include exotic options like lamb, etc. It's all good, though if you do order meat, leave some room in your stomach while you're exploring the buffet so that you'll be able to appreciate the meat when they deliver it to your table later. When dinner is over, it's a great idea to go back to the cash register to try one of the MANY varieties of baklava they offer. Then there's the question of the tip. Staff members are always coming around refilling your drink and taking away your empty plates, but when I asked about tip, they kept whispering to me that it's not necessary. However, I'm torn about this because I certainly want the nice people serving me to get paid. I guess you can think about this and do whatever you feel is right. Since you pay before you eat, tipping with a credit card involves returning to the cash register. My wife and I come here when we really want to give ourselves a special evening of unforgettable food. It's fun to see the families come in who look like they're from an exotic place themselves. One of my all-time favorite eating places in all the world.

This is a great Starbucks. I've had fun getting to know the folks who work here. I come in with my laptop and play cards online with my cousin, and I've found it to be a great place to hang out. It's not the biggest Starbucks I've visited - a few wooden tables and some chairs - but it's fun to relax at the tables outside (when the weather is nice), and there are almost always plugs available for my computer. And of course, great drinks, just as I've come to expect from Starbucks.

Ted is a man of honor. Let me tell you the story. Online (on one of the typical used-car websites) I saw that Ted was advertising a Honda Fit at an awesome price with not so many miles. So I called him up out of the blue and asked him to take the car to a nearby dealership so that they could conduct a Pre-Purchase Inspection (which I agreed to pay for - of course). They listed about $2,000 worth of things which could be improved - but since they're a dealership, many of these things were petty issues which don't matter. I called Ted and told him what they'd found, and he offered to repair the significant flaws. However, honestly, I wouldn't be able to verify that he'd made these repairs (since I don't know much about cars), so he agreed to simply come down on the price so I could have my own mechanic fix the car. We agreed on a price which was good for both of us, and now I have an excellent car I'm cruising around in. Thanks Ted!!

This is the ultimate "local favorite" restaurant. So many of my friends have decided that this is their absolute favorite eatery. There is a guy who runs it - I think "Dino" is his name - who is apparently straight from Sicily. His hospitality and effervescent friendliness pervade the place. He greets the guests and seats them, runs about talking to them, talks to the kitchen for them, and even sings to them. Then the food comes - which is so good that you're wondering what type of magic you've put in your mouth. It's just a tiny little restaurant, but with sooo much heart and good food!!
