Those in the know suspect Mr. Cage was looking to be paid. As with so much of life, Dr. Roark, it is indeed all about the Benjamins.

My kid and I visited Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, a great little aggie park in the heart of the suburbs in Overland Park, Kansas. I pushed her in the rocking seat a lot. We ate lunch. We enjoyed the weather. She fed some baby goats. Good day.

My daughter and I drove from the suburbs to downtown Kansas City to help clean up the Jewish section of a historic but run-down cemetery.

In addition to being Memorial Day, today is actually the day after John Wayne's birthday. While many of his contemporaries, including Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable and Ronald Reagan, served in the armed forces during World War II, the cowardly drunk who starred in drum-banging propaganda like 1945’s “They Were Expendable,” 1948’s “Fort Apache” and 1968’s “The Green Berets” did not, because he was too busy making money in Hollywood while all the talented actors were busy fighting an actual war, not playing dress-up, like he was. Was he merely a spineless phony, or an opportunistic war profiteer?

Lew Ayres, one of Wayne's contemporaries, was a pacifist, and conscientious objector. However, unlike Wayne, he actually requested (and was eventually granted) assignment to a non-combat medical unit, deployed to the Pacific front, where he served in the reclamation of the Island of Leyte (also known as the largest naval battle in modern history) in the Philippines, where he helped set up Evac hospitals, under fire, and treat wounded soldiers and civilians as a medic.  He then donated all the money he made as a soldier to the Red Cross. Lew Ayres was almost blacklisted for not wanting to kill, and instead asking to work as a medic. Meanwhile, Wayne was deferred and deferred and deferred, and hailed as a heroic figure.

John Wayne would be 107 today, but his chickenhawk bravado, shocking disdain for actual veterans, and gung-ho "Let's send your kids to kill that guy's kids" attitude lives on, in every gutless corporate fucking running dog serving in our government today. Wayne proved that fake toughness, rabble-rousing phony patriotism, and the self-preservation of a sewer rat could result in a long and profitable career. These are some of the successful chickenhawks that have never served, but still find plenty of time to either produce phony wars for profit, or the patriotic fearmongering rhetoric to support them:  Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Glen Beck, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, Rupert Murdoch, Rudy Giuliani, Joe Lieberman, Mitch McConnell, Trent Lott, John Boehner, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Dennis Hastert, Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Scooter Libby, Alan Keyes, John Bolton, Ted Nugent, Tony Snow, Toby Keith. I can only hope being a chickenhawk causes the same kind of cancer that killed Wayne.

Places for the disabled or slow-walking to enjoy manicured gardens and Versailles-like spaces of serenity. Places for kids to run and play around. Places for the intrepid hikers to dig into some good hiking in the much longer back trails. Absolutely a place for everyone.

Their practice manager, Heather, is a nominee for the 2015 Veterinary Economics Practice Manager of the Year award, so they've GOTTA have a GREAT manager there, right? :)

The grounds are kept in good shape. The maintenance team is responsive. The neighbors are good, a mix of singles, families, college students, etc. It's a little on the expensive side, but can't complain with the results!
