Why do most academic paper pdfs lack dates?  I find it rather annoying.

It is annoying. I have to back out to the scholar.google.com search results to get the date.

No matter who is making something: people x technology systems = productivity. productivity * natural resources = GDP. Over time unless some party asymmetrically dominates that should balance out just like an ecosystem, and the trauma just comes from adaptation, conflict, or lagging due to ...

Yes and no, I think. It's bread and circuses again. The rich and powerful will continue to placate the mob only until they no longer need it. The mob is born together with the fascist oligarchy, and both are killed by the dictator who comes to power by manipulating the class struggle. Our republican experiment presupposes a kind of virtuous and literate citizenry with nearly universal values that we no longer have, if we ever did. No civilization long survives the death of the religion that made it. But artificial intelligence may make all such anthropological theories irrelevant, as would, say, a collision with a stray planet.

[<< | Prev | Index | Next | >>]. Sunday, April 12, 2015. Henry Darton. Henry Darton soldered on the last capacitor, inserted the battery, and closed the cover. It looked a lot like a key fob for a car, but it was so much more. Henry had been working out the details for nearly three years, ...

Reminds me of some of the classic sci-fi of my youth, only better. I'm sure I haven't yet found everything in it. Would make a great Twilight Zone.

Anybody here have an SGD (stochastic gradient descent) setup with an existing problem in which to test proposed SGD variations?  In particular I'm looking at ways to use the Hessian-vector product in SGD (as opposed to mini-batch CG) so would need a setup that can compute H*v (in this case: H from a single pattern -- no batch).

I've sorta shelved the Hessian approach for the moment but he may want to try SMORMS3 if he's using SGD.

Of all the big "individual" success stories, where one person is seen as having made a big impact on the world, in what fraction of them did that individual do the actual work vs. delegating out?  Or put another way, how many successes are due to finding solutions vs. simply choosing the right problems for other people to solve?  And for the latter cases, how do you distinguish insight from survivorship bias (i.e. luck)?

Indeed, how do you convince others that the problems are solvable or worth solving is the problem.
