Today in History: Darwin & Wallace Announce Evolution Theory, 1858
On August 20, 1858 — 156 years ago today — Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace made a joint announcement of the theory of evolution through natural selection in The Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London. Since Darwin and Wallace first published their ideas, virtually every discovery in the fields of natural history, geology, genetics, and paleoanthropology has supported or extended their central thesis — all life is related, species change over time in response to natural selection, and new forms replace those that came before.
