There is already snow on some of the high peaks, but the trails in the Buffalo Creek area sometimes remain dry enough to ride well into December. The Shinglemill Creek ride is a collection of old trails, a very nice new one, and and an orphan that was previously too short to ride on its own.

It can get a little chilly in the deep valleys and on the wind swept peaks of the Centennial Cone ride, but this is still the best time of year to go there. Even though recent storms scoured the trail from end to end, and dug out a few trenches here and there, the trail is almost perfect.

Its tempting to save the Georgia Pass ride until the aspen have started to change, but it will almost certainly snow at least once before then, and it may not melt before it snows again. There is still snow on top from last year, with a lot of water running everywhere, so it would be wise to take advantage of the good weather before its too late. There are an equal number of trees across the trail on either side of the loop, but the trail is clear between Kenosha Pass and Jefferson Creek.

While there isn't much in the way of scenery visible from the trail on the Sourdough ride, the forest is lush and always smells good. The first few miles looks more like a riverbed than ever, but this is another one of those rides where being there is more important than the quality of the trail. The north end has been cleaned up considerably since last year, and even includes a sign.

Rabbit Mountain is a good place to start the mountain biking season, because it has been dry for months. Few of the bushes have leaves on them, but the whole trail smells of flowers.

A short section of trail on the Apex ride is still closed,  but the only consequence is a much longer climb. Once it reopens at the end of the year, the temporarily suspended directional restrictions will be reinstated. Much needed work is being done on the trail near the top that might complicate access, but it still seems to be open.

The Chimney Gulch ride is basically just a long climb, followed by a brake glazing descent, but especially when time is in short supply, its a great substitute for some of the other much longer trails in the area. Expect a lot of interruptions on the downhill if the parking lot is full.

The same nice weather that is bringing out the crowds on the Kenosha Pass ride also seem to be allowing the aspen to hold onto their leaves. The brilliant fall colors have been at their peak for a few weeks now, and could last another week or more. With hundreds of cars lined up along the roads and highway, riding might seem like a mistake at first, but once the crowds have been left behind, there will be over ten miles of trail ahead with almost no one on it.

It looks like the underpass on the Marshall Mesa ride won't be completed until the end of the year, so there is no longer any reason to put off riding it until the last minute. One more year of bypassing the closed section of trail by riding back and forth for a couple of miles on a road, and waiting for an interminable traffic light, is actually a small price to pay for such a huge benefit. Most of the livestock gates are open, which is nice, and at least one has a latch that doesn't require flinging chains around.

The Geer Canyon access is now open on the south end of Heil Ranch, as are all the trails, many of which include major improvements. Still, riding from end to end, including both sides of the loop in the middle, will probably always take about five hours. Two separate rides would be far less brutal, but would also involve riding the rocky loop on top both times.
