3 Factors to Consider in Choosing a Hospice

Bonum Hospice serves the Los Angeles community, which is one of the most diverse counties in the U.S. It is our mission to ensure that the comfort of the patient is achieved. It doesn’t matter who they are, where they come from, what they believe in, what their preference is, and what group they belong to. Our services are offered with no limitations. Just inform us when you need hospice care and we’ll send our staff to conduct an assessment. Through it, we will be able to determine the best hospice care for you. Here are three factors to consider when you choose a hospice:

• Accessibility

It is important that the hospice you’re taking your loved one to is close to home. In that way, it is convenient for you and the rest of the family members, or friends, to visit them whenever possible. It gives you more time to spend with your ailing loved one making them feel you’re around for them.

• Availability

Crisis can arise anytime so it is best that hospice staff are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With that, they can easily come when needed and attend to the patient’s needs right away.

• Credibility

It’s highly recommended that a hospice organization is accredited and complies with all aspects of NHPCO’s standards for hospice programs. Accreditation is not required but it can be a reflection of its commitment to quality. The same goes with the staff. They should be well-trained, skilled, and certified in hospice care.

Showing Support to a Once-Close Family Member

It’s hard to wrap your head around the idea of someone being related to you fighting an illness. You saw it on the news or online, but it never once crossed your mind that someone you know will soon be laid down to rest. A lot of us don’t dwell on that idea and it comes off as a shock when we do acknowledge it. If you want to show your support to a relative that was once close to you, but you don’t know how, here are things you can do:

• Talk
If you haven’t talked in a while, fill them in on what’s currently happening in your life.

• Revisit
Maybe you weren’t as close as before because you’re living in different cities or your jobs got in the way. Whatever is the case, taking a trip down memory lane can help reduce any awkwardness both of you might be feeling.

• Show up
If you make a promise to be there for them from here on out, stick to it. Don’t let them down.

When’s the Right Time to Say the Right Thing?

One of the most difficult things one will experience in their lifetime is to see a friend or relative battle an illness that’s hard to conquer. There is no recipe that ensures that you will come out of the journey unscathed, but there are things that you can say that will bring comfort to that friend or relative. Here are tips on knowing the right time to say the right thing:

• Ask your friends and family

If you’re not sure that one you’re going to say is appropriate or you don’t know when to say it, asking for advice from the people you trust can help you.

• “Right” is subjective

Another thing that one must understand that the right time to say the right thing is subjective. It might sound okay in your head, but it might also sound wrong to someone else’s. It’s always wise to tread carefully in this area.

• Show, don’t tell

You can also show and tell. Your loved one is going through a lot of things right now, be there for them through it all. Offer words of encouragement, a shoulder to cry on. It will mean so much to them.
