It's a tough spot to be in. I have been pushing to change the mentality of clients a lot as of late. To stop obsessing over rankings, but its all they know. Hell, I even did an open letter about it this week on the company blog http://www.plasticsurgerystudios.com/blog/internet-marketing/an-open-letter-from-internet-marketing-manager-mike-wilton/, but at the end of the day this is the one metric that most clients look to most. Even when they know the limitations of rankings because of localization and personalization they want to see that they rank in a certain spot on page 1 regardless if the proof is out there. And that's even when you present them with other core metrics that have value, such as traffic, conversions, etc.
