The Raccoon on the lower left was acting as lunch for the buzzard who was waiting for us to leave the area.
You can just see it's ears poking up from the gray mass of fur.
There was another raccoon down the road and around the corner about 100 yards away who was slowly fermenting. The dogs were interested the first time we saw it last week, but we just kept moving before they could consult with it. The raccoon was left untouched all week as we jogged by.
Originally I thought it was just bad luck and a 2nd raccoon had been hit by a car today, but when I got to the resting spot of the 1st raccoon, it was no longer there. It was clearly the same animal, but up the hill by the side of the street with the buzzard happily having lunch
On this photo, the dogs had spooked it and he/she moved up the hill a little bit to keep an eye on it's food.
The conundrum is how the raccoon got there. Walking was obviously out of the question since it had been dead for a week.
Did a human carry it up there? Unlikely because it was still in plain view and they could have just tossed it in the bushes where it first lay. And do you know how many parasites a raccoon carries? I do and I wouldn't touch it with a 5 foot pole.
Did the buzzard move it there? Possibly, but why would it leave it so close to the street? I didn't think that buzzards are capable of picking up a relatively large animal and flying it that distance. In any case, it would probably take it somewhere less busy.
Likewise for another carnivore...unlikely place to leave it since the original location had better hiding places.
In any case, it was his/her lunch and not mine (for sure), interesting problem.
