Is Private Cloud or IaaS for You?
My involvement in corporate IT seems to be rapidly moving towards and embracing Cloud technology to assist my clients.  The deeper I get involved with Cloud, the more I see a great deal of confusion both by customers who do not understand what cloud is or s...

Albert,

Great article -- August 2, 1972 talking about lack of compatibility between RPG on the S3 and S370!  RPG was simply not intended to be a major application development language.  If it were it would have been fully supported across all IBM machines and most likely pushed through the standards process as COBOL was!  RPG is as its proper name implies a "Report Program Generator"  that was its intent and purpose.

IBM has done nothing to promote RPG and has done everything to restrict its use and adoption including removing support for all Operating Systems except for IBM i...  Go Figure.

The outside world looks at IBM systems as a "niche" market.

Ken, I totally agree. But step back and look objectively at IBM and ask yourself, what is IBM's place in the world today? I'm not sure I can answer that question. It certainly isn't computer hardware any more...

The Internet is Getting Slower
I heard this headline on my 11pm local TV news last night and figured I better do some checking to see what was going on.  Well it seems that they were right.  As of yesterday, the FCC ruled in favor (a 3 - 2 vote along political lines) of Obama's "Net Neut...

Cloud as it Should Be
Yesterday I wrote a short blog about private cloud and IaaS which is where many vendors and IT executives are trying to divert their companies in terms of cloud initiatives.  This maintains IT staff jobs and vendors are able to sell hardware and middleware ...

Open Source to the Next Level with Incredible MySQL Database Support

Vendor Loyalty?
Do you recall the old saying "No one got fired for recommending IBM"?  More importantly are you old enough to remember when it was a true statement.  Today I wonder how long IBM will be in the computer hardware business... I grew up with IBM.  I did recomme...

Ken,

I did some work for a software vendor who used cloud to move companies to the cloud. It was an interesting business model. The software was open source that they customized for the industry they were targeting and the solution was deployed via a cloud carrier. It was a win win solution for everyone. The money was made in the services to install, train, and deploy the application replacing any old software and/or hardware.

I really think this model has teeth and can scale from the smallest to the largest enterprises. Look at the economics. In most companies moving the hardware with OS, Middleware, and Security support to the cloud will save millions in salaries alone. Not to mention a more scalable hardware solution. Think about companies with a seasonal increase in business. They simply pay more during the peak and the price goes down after the peak. Its like using electricity or any other utility.

System Modernization
Where people are today: Do you use IBM Mainframes, IBM i (OS/400) based systems?  Do you have a large inventory of custom written COBOL or RPG programs? Do you use CICS 3270 or IBM 5250 green screen applications? Do you have an inventory of old mainframe ba...

Bob, the landscape is littered with mistakes that well intentioned companies have made. Cloud computing is basically, out-sourcing your IT resources, and work, to a Third party, to save a great deal of money.
I seem to recall IBM out-sourcing PCs to Bill Gates back in the 80's
Not 100% convinced yet, that Cloud computing is a solid answer
