Vendor Loyalty?
Do you recall the old saying "No one got fired for recommending IBM"?  More importantly are you old enough to remember when it was a true statement.  Today I wonder how long IBM will be in the computer hardware business... I grew up with IBM.  I did recomme...

Ken,

I did some work for a software vendor who used cloud to move companies to the cloud. It was an interesting business model. The software was open source that they customized for the industry they were targeting and the solution was deployed via a cloud carrier. It was a win win solution for everyone. The money was made in the services to install, train, and deploy the application replacing any old software and/or hardware.

I really think this model has teeth and can scale from the smallest to the largest enterprises. Look at the economics. In most companies moving the hardware with OS, Middleware, and Security support to the cloud will save millions in salaries alone. Not to mention a more scalable hardware solution. Think about companies with a seasonal increase in business. They simply pay more during the peak and the price goes down after the peak. Its like using electricity or any other utility.

System Modernization
Where people are today: Do you use IBM Mainframes, IBM i (OS/400) based systems?  Do you have a large inventory of custom written COBOL or RPG programs? Do you use CICS 3270 or IBM 5250 green screen applications? Do you have an inventory of old mainframe ba...

Bob, the landscape is littered with mistakes that well intentioned companies have made. Cloud computing is basically, out-sourcing your IT resources, and work, to a Third party, to save a great deal of money.
I seem to recall IBM out-sourcing PCs to Bill Gates back in the 80's
Not 100% convinced yet, that Cloud computing is a solid answer

No such a great tutorial.  Most of the content is obvious and the few things he attempts to explain that could use an explanation like contacts and calendar are totally screwed up and a waste of time.  Save your time don't watch this.

IBM Watson and Cognitive Computing
Almost everyone knows that IBM put their Watson computer system up against humans to win Jeopardy and made headlines.  What many do not know is that IBM in January created a new business unit at the highest levels of the company headed by a Senior Vice Pres...

System Documentation?

I suppose from a financial standpoint it makes sense. They (IBM) may see the writing on the wall regarding the ISeries.
I did some CICS assembler code back in the 70's...hard to believe it's still
around and going strong

Big Changes in Computing
I've been following IBM's Q4 results along with its 2013 year end results and statements being made by Virginia Rometty, President and CEO about IBM's future.  It is clear that Cloud and Big Data are IBM's strategic direction. In Rometty's letter to shareho...

Ken, that is more true than you think. Eliminate the machines and the folks that support them.  All that is left is the application. You get a dramatically lower cost and vastly improved environment including better security, solid systems, state of the art disaster recovery, etc.

You do need to choose your cloud provider carefully however...
