This past Saturday we had the pleasure of photographing Dean, Jason and Toni's newest addition to their family. It was an amazing session with lots of great images created. Here is one of Jason's favorites!

Maternity photography can be laughing-out-loud fun! Recently we had a creative fun-filled session with Jean and her hubby Eugene, a couple who were obviously delighted to be expecting their first child very soon.

At the consultation a few days before the portrait session, we’d found out that these two loved to laugh, joke, and have fun-- in fact, Jean said, most of their snapshots were of them laughing! Naturally, they wanted the pregnancy photos to reflect their personalities and they’d looked all over Orange County to find just the right photographer. The way they related to each other, I just knew taking pictures of this couple was going to be fun!

Who would have thought that a single photograph published almost 21 years ago would launch a new a new form of photography? That image was of a nude and pregnant Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. With that one photograph, the creative talent of Annie Lieborwitz  started a whole new genre of photography known as maternity portraits or pregnancy photography.

Up until that time women were expected to hide their pregnancy under oversized dresses. But now women can celebrate being pregnant. They can share the wonderful transformation they are going through. Clothing styles have change tremendously. No longer are expectant mothers hiding under enormous sheets of fabric, but instead are showing their changing shape and growing belly. Because of these changes in fashion and photography, women can show as much or as little as they want and feel good about it.

This new genre of photography has also been culturally transforming. What used to be avoided by both expectant mothers and photographers is now celebrated. Women are now encouraged by their friends and family to have professional maternity portraits taken. It’s even grown to a point where families are budgeting for it when planning their family.

And seeing beautiful photographs created by professional maternity photographers, women now feel more comfortable in sharing the beauty of their own pregnancy.

At Blue Moon Photography we offer so many choices for expectant moms. It doesn’t matter if she is looking for a conservative portrait that shows that simply reflects shape of her belly or if she’s looking for a fine art nude, we offer something for every woman.

Regardless of the style of photography they choose, they know they will look totally amazing. With our knowledge of lighting we can shape the light and shadows to create the most flattering and beautiful images of each mother and child. Oh, and those stretch marks, blemishes and uneven skin tones that sometimes occurs? They can magically disappear with some of our expert retouching - at no extra cost.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms

THE MOMMY TEST
Author unknown

I was out walking with my 4-year-old daughter. She picked up
something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. "Why?" my daughter asked.

"Because it's been lying outside, you don't know where it's
been, it's dirty and probably has germs" I replied.

At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration
and asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?"

"Uh," I was thinking quickly, " All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test.
You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was
evidently pondering this new information.

"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test
you have to be the daddy."

"Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face and joy
in my heart.

We did NOT have a good experience with this photographer. We felt rushed during our session and that he was rude to our family. I will add my response to the photographers response below... Charlie, your lengthy response just proves even more why we did not have a good experience with you. I am not "cyber bullying"- I am making sure that other customers know what our experience was like with your business- which is what internet reviews are intended for- and for the record this is my google account. As for Yelp- you paid to have my review removed. I kept my initial review short and sweet, but I could go into the fact that you cussed at me (2 weeks postpartum), over the phone when I asked for an emailed sample picture, with your response being "We are not f**king doing it!", then hanging up on me. Plus the fact that you blame our 5 year old son for our experience- is just ludicrous. If you are supposed to be a family photographer, it is your job to understand that photo shoots with children will take extra time. I did email you samples of poses that I wanted to do for both the newborn and Christmas session before hand, along with details of props that I was bringing- since you do not have very many for newborns. If you thought that we would not be able to complete those, you should have told us before the session. Of course parents of a 2 week old newborn are not getting much sleep at night, we called you to see if we could start an hour later, which again, if this was a problem or if you had plans that evening- you should have told us at the time- not while we are in the middle of taking the pictures. Charlie, you only had 8 days to fulfill the order- by your choice! We wanted to meet earlier to go over the pictures, but YOU wanted to wait until after the Thanksgiving Holiday. The reason we asked for discounts is because your prices are outrageously expensive! We were not asking that you do not pay state tax, we were inquiring that if we pay in cash, instead of credit card, you would be saving credit card fees, so in turn many companies give a discount for that. For the record the $1000 that we spent was for only 10 sheets! Charlie, how you behaved was incredibly unprofessional and out of line. The worst part is, that you are not even aware of that or willing to apologize for it. Stick to landscape photography.

Response from the owner - a year ago
Sari, I see you are continuing your cyber bullying and being vindictive. Once again I see that you are using a false identity! First you posted a review on Yelp not using your real name and posted as "Summer D." of Irvine. Then you posted another one on Yelp using your real name and location. Now you're posting on Google+. What you are trying to accomplish here? I don't understand your actions. I find it strange that your reviews never mentioned how much you loved your first child's newborn session and also the two maternity sessions we did for you. After those you'd even said that you would recommend us to your friends and family. In your Yelp review you said that many of the photos from you second child's newborn session did not turn out well, yet you purchased over a $1000 worth of small prints from that session and not one was a duplicate. At the time you ordered the prints, we discussed all the retouching that would be done on the images, including head swaps. You placed your order for 10 different images with us on November 27th for delivery on December 5th so that you could have them for display for a party that you were giving. Your request allowed us just 8 days, including Sunday, to complete and print your order. Despite our busy Christmas rush, we accomplished that for you. Then you requested us to create a composite image from several different images, which we accomplished. Your prints were delivered on time and with the highest quality that we provide to all of our clients, even during our busiest time of the year. You were always asking for more extensive discounts, which as I said many times to you, we could not provide. We also had to charge you sales tax (by law). I feel that your husband's suggestion that we should break the law by accepting "payment under the table" was unethical. Of course we're not going to do that to save you some money! As for feeling rushed, let's set the record straight: 1. You came in with over 20 different setups and props for the newborn session. When you sent us an email you saying these were the ones you liked, it did not say that you wanted all of them created plus some poses we did for your first child. If you had made it clearer, I would have told you it was not possible in the time allotted. Nonetheless even though we were taken by surprise, we politely tried to accommodate you as best we could. 2. You changed the session time from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm so that you could get more sleep. We told you that we would accommodate you the best we could considering this was before Christmas and our scheduling was very tight. We provided you with a long 2 hour newborn session, but at the session you then wanted us to postpone our plans we'd scheduled for that evening so your session could run longer. To accommodate you we did re-arrange our plans and extended your session for another hour. 3. The session was supposed to be a newborn session, instead ended up being a newborn and a Christmas portrait session. Something that would require more than one session, but then again we bent over backwards to fulfill your request. 4. Your son was not cooperating with you or with us. That required us to spend more time for each pose and setup. Your husband tried to get your 5 year old son to cooperate and even took him aside several times and tried to talk with him. When that didn't work, your husband tried bribing him with toys to try to get him to cooperate. Finally your husband took him to the nearby park so we could create some more images of your newborn daughter. When they returned you could see by the expression on your husband's face that things did not go well at the park.
