We happened upon The Blue Mermaid by accident and I am glad that we did. The restaurant is colorful and cheery. I thought that the menu offered a lot of different choices but not too many to leave me questioning how I could eat 5 entrees!. for a starter I had the black bean soup. Very good. It was flavorful and spiced just enough to make my mouth tingle. For an entrée my girlfriend had the Jerk Chicken and I had the Rasta Pasta. with a name like that, I had to go for it. I had the choice of different levels of spices. Not knowing the chefs description of what may be hot, I chose the medium. Great choice. It had just enough bite to it to make it interesting. I chose to have the Rasta Pasta with the add on of chicken. The dish itself was delicious. spicey yet flavorful. My girlfriend had the jerk chicken. I did not try any of hers. Given the spices in my soup and pasta I didn't think I would get a good tasting. She said it was delicious however. I would recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere but mostly for the food. It was great and priced right.

In Portsmouth to celebrate our anniversary last week. Stopped in here for a quick dinner before a show. We shared some small plates: Lobster Quesadilla, Saddle Bags, Grilled Scallops on Crispy Wontons, and a couple of Margaritas. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. Seasoning was unique on each dish. Loved the seaside/island atmosphere. Service was very pleasant and she made good recommendations. We enjoyed it so much we stopped back the next evening for a couple more Margaritas, a few more appetizers and to listen to the band! We will definitely go back.

Very good food with a frequently changing menu. They make the best Sweet Corn Fritters I've ever had.

Words can't even begin to describe The Blue Mermaid. Everything from the food to the service and even the decor was spot on! One of the best, if not the best restaurant in Portsmouth and the Seacoast. Our first trip here was for restaurant week, and everything was fantastic. We have since been back at least once a week, and we feel like family. Do yourself a favor and get down to The Blue Mermaid! The short ribs are a must have, along with the saddlebags!

Such a fun place with great flavors and vibe. The staff is really friendly too. My favorite dinner is the Guava Braised Short Ribs with a Fire & Ice Margarita

Had a great dinner here and will come back. The atmosphere, drinks and food are all great - The bar is too small though. This is a sit-down place.

So my boyfriend, and I went to Portsmouth to celebrate our anniversary. We chose the Blue Mermaid, because Caribbean inspired food sounded great. We made a reservation, and when we got there they sat us on the middle of three very rowdy birthday parties. We couldn't even hear each other, because of their obnoxious screaming. I would think with making the reservation, they would of chosen a better placement for a table of two. The menu sounded really good. my boyfriend ordered the paella, and I ordered the salmon that was offered with two sides. My meal was roughly around $23. The piece of absolutely flavorless salmon was probably 3 oz. The rice that i had picked as a side was under cooked, and the meal over all was just lack luster (especially for the price!). But the worse thing I think that happened of the night, was when a fly that had been pestering my boyfriend all night, decided to land on my food. The waitress came over to ask how the food was. I told her that a fly had landed on my food, she said sorry..but really didn't seem to care. She told me she would go talk to the kitchen. After 10 minutes of us waiting with no word from the waitress, (or a manager who i would have expected to have come over) she brought me out a new side of sweet potatoes.. I would have expected a whole new meal, but I guess she just wanted me to eat around the bits that the fly had vomited on. Service was bad, environment was bad, and the food was horrible!

Got the Jerk Chicken - what is jerk about it? Way over priced. Appetizers were so so. I got the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos but they came shaped like mine taco salads. It just didn't work at all. The curry sweet potato soup my friend had was so so at best he said. The salad was pretty good but not the best. I've been to restaurants all over Portsmouth and I can't figure out how this place is still open. Lousy seating in the bar area downstairs. Service was fair at best. Food had no flavor. On my jerk chicken plate they served whipped sweet potato and and absolutely unseasoned, untreated, lukewarm broccoli tops. No salt, no nothing. Between the two of us we spent $100 and I felt like we got ripped off. Not recommended.
