Actually Debeers holds massive stockpiles of diamonds so they have a higher value in the first place. If they were to actually release all their diamonds the price would plummet. +Mike Martin 
+Dwayne Parsons is right. Diamonds are one of the most common substances. They are only valuable because the mines are owned by a monopoly that only allows a limited release of stock. They also have a great marketing campaign.
