Ok - this is probably the most obscure Easter Egg I have ever found in a movie. This is a still-shot from the BluRay version of John Carpenter's The Thing. I was wondering if the books had any meaning - for example, the title "Welcome to the Club" has a bit of an amusing tie-in to the theme of the film. But what is "Seven Who Beat the Headsman?" If you do any research you'll find about six references to the title of this fictional book, all from an episode of the TV show "Mrs Columbo."
At first I thought this meant that perhaps the fake book was just a prop shared by the studio - but then I went and looked up the reference in IMDB and found this interesting fact:
The "Mrs. Columbo" episode (1979) included the author of the book - fictional writer Ian A. Morly. And who played Morly? Long time Carpenter collaborator Donald Pleasance! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078635/fullcredits#cast
I don't think this is a coincidence. I think I just revealed that Donald Pleasance was in The Thing!
