I think I need to say this again: My intentions with this community (African-American Artists) is for African-American artists to share more about their background, their biographies, how they go about creating their artwork, what inspires them to create art, etc. Please do NOT use this particular community to post your artwork. Use either the Emerging Artist Community or the African-American Art Showcase Community to post images of your artwork. You can however provide a link to your website if you post a biography or any of the information noted above for people to follow up with or learn more about you.

In addition, please put your post in the most relevant category so this community can maintain a sense of structure. I know it may not be important to some but it's just one of those things that matters to me and if you could work with me on it I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks and I look forward to learning more about all of you!

Salute to Devin Allen! A young African American self taught photographer whose photos of the rallies and protest that took place in his West Baltimore neighborhood are now being featured in an exhibit at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, MD. He is only the third self taught photographer to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine.
Devin Allen says that photography saved his life — two nights in a row.

Thurman, a local African-American artist whose 40 years’ worth of work is celebrated in this show, depicts his subjects with deep respect through bold colors and a range of painting sizes from monumental to small. Much of his art explores the African Diaspora by portraying the lives of sharecroppers and bluesmen who underwent spiritual and physical journeys to better their lives.
The exhibition Solomon Thurman: An Artistic Practice at The Sheldon strongly attracted me. Albert Woodfox is a member of the Angola Three and a former member of the Black Panther Party. He spent 43 years in solitary confinement after being convicted of killing a prison guard in 1972 even though there was no physical evidence linking them to the crime. He secured an unconditional release from a Judge in June 2015 before an appeal blocked his release. He is the only member of the Angola Three still imprisoned. This is artist Brand Odums tribute to him.
Albert Woodfox has been held in solitary confinement in Louisiana State prisons for 40 years.
