I just have to say a few words about this latest thing people are acting all upset about. I feel some sympathy with the people this happened to, but not actually all that much. And I'll tell you why:

You bought a closed proprietary device, knowing it was tied to a closed proprietary backend system.

What did you expect would happen?

It annoys me that so many people and sites, who should be knowing better, claim that the devices are being bricked. They are not. The devices are untouched, only the backend service is being shut down. The system stops working as a whole, but the hardware is not being bricked by anyone.

Yeah, it still sucks. Just like it would suck if sites like Facebook, Google+, Netflix or Spotify would suddenly shut down. Most of us have investments, monetary or emotional, in services like these and when they stop being available for some reason, it hurts.

But what is the alternative? Should you be forced to run and maintain any internet service you create as long as anybody in the world still wants to use it? These are businesses, making business decisions. It sucks when things you use are cancelled. Google does it to us every year with their "spring cleaning". I still haven't gotten around to finding a suitable replacement for "My Tracks". But please tell me what alternative scenario, where companies were not allowed to act like this, would make even a modicum of sense?

If you don't want to be at the mercy of the profit margin of corporate entities, choose not to. Chose openness, not closedness. Reject solutions that depend on profits, and are thus subject to the whims of their corporate overlords. Yeah, it takes a little more effort to host things yourself. Everything is a little less polished. Maybe you even have to learn something new. Why is that?

Because nobody is trying to sell it to you!

If you prefer to trade a little of your money for a little added convenience by going the closed and proprietary route, then fine. This is the world you choose. This is the risk you take. I make no judgement, I do it too. But don't go around screaming bloody murder when the proprietary solution you've chosen turns out to not be profitable enough for the company to keep alive. They're not a charity.

You have a choice. Use it.

A fascinating view of the latest total eclipse from inside Alaska Airlines flight 870, who delayed and rerouted their flight to give passengers an optimal view of the eclipse.
