“Off the water grid” project design for Autonomous “Net-Zero Water Buildings” (1038257) will be led by James Englehardt, with collaboration from researchers Kenneth Broad, Miroslav Kubat, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Kamal Premaratne, all from the University of Miami. 

The treatment and conveyance of drinking water and wastewater consumes a significant amount of energy.  One approach to reducing energy costs as well as the types of needed treatments is through autonomous net-zero water buildings. In this project, the research team will build on current technologies that allow many functions of water monitoring, quality control, and operation and maintenance to be decentralized, and develop a decentralized, low-energy direct potable reuse system.   They will design water treatment to effectively destroy contaminants common to homes and workplaces (such as endocrine-disrupting pharmaceuticals), create novel algorithms for real-time risk assessment, and investigate concepts of architectural and socio-cultural acceptability.

Potable water “demand would go to somewhere near zero,” said James Englehardt, University of Miami (UM) College of Engineering professor and chief investigator of the project, titled Design for Autonomous Net-Zero Water Buildings.
 
“We selected the Bio-Microbics® BioBarrier® system based on its competitive cost and projected effluent quality, including our particular need to bring total nitrogen to below drinking water standards in the effluent. In fact, with the addition of alkalinity and ethanol feeders, nitrogen was never an issue, and the system ran trouble-free for the duration of the two-year experiment with no attention other than chemical tank recharge,” said Englehardt.

Ofwat chief executive Cathryn Ross has urged the #water sector to rethink how it deals with and treats #wastewater in order to improve its resilience.   Absolutely! 

"...Ross added that the water created once the wastewater has been treated should be seen as a "genuinely useful resource” rather than wastewater solely being seen as something that needs to be dealt with and then disposed of.
“There’s a culture change that will have to come on this at some point,” she said.
