Here's a site I came across today while working on aggregating more population data for 1840 for my DESW population data project. This particular building was built in 1828 by John Pray to be used as a trading post, tavern and hostel and is located in Waterville, Ohio. Screemshot via Google Street View. Here's another nice house I found on Google Street View while working on expanding the coverage I have for New England in my DESW population data project. This one is in Southport, Connecticut. I love the white picket fence, shrubs, and the big, tall tree in front of the house providing shade to the yard.

Here's a Victorian house I found in Assonet, Massachusetts on Google Street View as I was working on expanding the coverage I have for New England in my DESW population data project. To the right is a carriage house, only part of which is visible in this screenshot, it shares the same design as the main house. I like the white balustrades demarcating the perimeter, the bracketed gable and the Gothic-Palladian window located within the gable. The greenery and the time of day, which feels like it is either morning or evening, adds a comforting atmosphere to this scene for me.

As I've been working on expanding the New England coverage of my DESW population data project I've been coming across many lovely houses. This one is located in a small village in Massachusetts called Grafton. This house has quite an imposing Greek front with fluted Ionic columns. The embellishment on either side of the window located in the gable is also interesting. This image is via Google Street View.

I came across this place in Kennebunk, Maine on Google Street View as I was working on expanding my population data collection's coverage for New England today. It is interesting that it has two porticoes on opposite sides. It kind of makes it look like a semi-detached, but there's only one driveway.

Here's an overview of the projects that I worked on over the past week. The thumbnail contains a screenshot showing a sample of what I've aggregated so far for 1830 for the state of Ohio from a historical gazetteer I found.

Here's an overview of the projects that I've been working on over the past week. The thumbnail contains a screenshot showing an area of Rhode Island that gave me a challenge to think about this past week. The map is one of the late 19th century US topographic ones that I've been using as part of a procedure that I've been doing to make the data that I've aggregated for New England more comparable with that of the rest of the US.
As usual, I continued work on my DESW "Developed English Speaking World" population data project. This week, I mostly finished working on trying to make the population figures I've aggregated for New England more comparable with those I have for the rest of the United States. I've also realized that Long Island, although part of New York state, had similar issues regarding political boundaries as New England did so I used the technique I started ...

As I'm going through this little old village in the town of Farmington, Connecticut on Google Street View I'm finding so many outstanding houses. I'm not entirely certain if this is an early 20th century revival or if it is an ornate Federalist era house, but it is quite intricate and picturesque! The gateway, topped by a pediment broken by a finial is a nice touch. I've been coming across these scenes as I've been working on making my data coverage for New England in my DESW population data project more comparable with that of the rest of the United States.

Here's an overview of the projects that I've been working on over the past week. The thumbnail contains a screenshot showing how I've been using historical US topographic maps and Google Earth/Street View to help figure out where urban centres were morphologically situated. This is part of a process that I've been using to help make the data that I have for New England more comparable to what I have collected for the rest of the US.
As usual, I continued work on my DESW "Developed English Speaking World" population data project. This week I finally finished the touch up phase that I've been working on lately. Now that this phase is done, there are just two more things I want to work on regarding my American data in this project before I move on to the other places analyzed in my DESW project. I started work on both of these two things this week. One of them is collecting mor...

Here's another striking house that I found in Kennebunk, Maine on Google Street View while expanding the New England coverage for my DESW project data. I love how vertical this Victorian Second Empire house is. You can also see a carriage house to the right behind the trees. This entire stretch of street is filled with visual delight.

Here are some handsome Victorian commercial block buildings that I found in downtown Bowling Green, Kentucky on Google Street View while working on my population data today. According to this 1840's gazetteer that I'm reading, the place was home to 1,400 inhabitants in 1840.

Eureka, California
This small city has quite a number of interesting Victorian architectural sites other than the famous Carson Mansion. I enjoyed this square I came across downtown while exploring on Google Street View. There is a tree in blossom to the left.

According to my population data, Eureka didn't show up in a decennial census until 1880 where it was returned as having 2,639 inhabitants. In 1890 it had risen to 4,858 and by 1900, the end of the Victorian ere, it had risen to 7,327. Today it is home to 27,191.
