An exquisite example of color theory: Combining pale tints and saturated shades to create a harmonious but strongly contrasting composition. I call them "killer combos."

Why not kick the garden gate open and do something bold? Cercis 'Forest Pansy' paired with Kniphofia 'Malibu' mix it up. (Design by Billy Goodnick)

Introduction

Billy Goodnick discovered horticulture in his twenties, studying bonsai and collecting house plants in Los Angeles. Hearing the sage advice “Take the thing you love most and make it your hobby,” he shelved his career as a studio drummer and touring musician and began his horticultural studies.

Billy recently completed a 22 year career as City Landscape Architect for Santa Barbara, with scores of community-enhancing projects to show for his time.

Interesting work, but there’s room on the plate. He has been demystifying garden design for two decades teaching Adult Ed classes and lecturing throughout southern California.

He embarked on a new chapter as an educator in the fall of 2009, as adjunct professor teaching landscape design in the Environmental Horticulture program at Santa Barbara City College.

Billy is a contributing editor at Fine Gardening Magazine, writing his Design Workshop feature in each issue, as well as writing his Sustainable Landscaping: Cool Green Gardens by Billy Goodnick blog.

Billy recently expanded his work as the garden writer for 805 Living, a lifestyle magazine in the Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara county area.

Billy is the sole proprietor of bgdc, a landscape architectural consulting firm specializing in small-scale residential design. bgdc has received numerous design awards. His designs have been featured in publications and on-line articles in the greater Santa Barbara region.

Billy co-hosts Garden Wise Guys, the sustainable landscaping show on CityTV18, and wrote a much-read landscaping feature for Santa Barbara Homeowner magazine for two years, and has an on-line column at Edhat.com. Taking the sage advice of his youth, Goodnick drums for King Bee, a local rock band performing music spanning from Elvis to Elvis.

Fall 2009 saw the launch of LawnReform.org, one of Billy's collaborative efforts. The Lawn Reform Coalition is a website founded by concerned professionals dedicated to more intelligent, planet-friendly ways of downsizing, eliminating and intelligently caring for turfgrass.

Billy volunteers his time on the board of directors for Santa Barbara Beautiful, a non-profit organization dedicated to planting trees in public areas and recognizing and awarding landscaping and architecture that enhances Santa Barbara.

I've been visiting D'Ann Lawson for a few decades when my lower back or neck are giving me trouble. Not only do her treatments alleviate my problem but she's one of those energetic, positive-energy people who just make you feel better being around.
