What I didn't expect and probably should have known was the power of John Leventhals musical vision throughout the performance as producer, music director , and guitar player. Trust me, it's pervasive and it fits her like sweet tea in the deep south on a hot summer day to a thirsty patron at your local general store. It just had that sense of authenticity that lets you truly feel that you could just sit back and appreciate and surrender to the experience unfolding in front of you, take as long as you'd like. Being familiar with her newest current album, I did expect to see a pro show with a great artist and a hot guitar player. Let me just say right now, that was an understatement, John Leventhal is a master of his own musical idiom. The way he weaves his guitar into the set with a tapestry of tasty notes in motion was not just impressive, it was a pleasure to hear and see. It's not something you typically see every day, it only comes from a heady highly advanced player with years of experience and a true understanding of the fretboard, theory and harmonic structure. This isn't a speed freak, this is a guy that has patience and let's it flow in a lyrical melodic way that makes sense from beginning to end, very poetic. From a guitarist point of view, to see a guy on a Tele or acoustic with impeccable tone like that having a question and answer session, basically a conversation within his own playing while still in the context of the song and a few times without the song with this kind of enviable precision with such taste was such a fresh experience. The real key was he did it without ever overpowering the message from the sender which Rosanne does extremely well pulling the audience into her story, no he supported and lifted her up to a new level and you couldn't help but smile.
Speaking of Rosanne, she learned her lessons well from her Daddy Johnny Cash with her ability work a crowd. Her well thought out anecdotes were woven into the intro of the songs and in between songs reaching into the hearts of every audience member and they all responded every time saying yes take us for another ride always showing much appreciation with every ending. And to have these two supported by such talented accomplished players like Kevin Barry from Berklee College of Music. He had his soaring moments on the Stratocaster that made you feel the authenticity coming from an obvious tonemaster, however he'd sit down and pick up the lap steel and it was magic, very well done. Keyboard player Glenn Patscha, almost more felt then heard which means he was doing his job but when she pointed, oh boy could this guy play and play in just about any direction you wanted to go. I do have to mention, bass player Andy Hess truly knew his role providing that solid bottom and never letting the groove fall. Then to mention, drummer Dan Rieser, what a solid meter and at the same time very inventive with his use of additional percussion.
All in all, yes it was a solid show but it was a moving show, very very nicely done, kudos to Rosanne Cash, you have the perfect cast and support, congratulations, you deserve it, your Dad would be so proud.
Lastly, if I could say, Rosanne Cash has entered into a new gear a new level of artistic expression with her last three albums, River And A Thread is noteworthy for any person that truly appreciates great music unencumbered by the groupthink that permeates the current music environment.
My wife and I have been on a 3 week caravanning holiday starting from Canberra then down to Victoria, NSW then into South Australia, back to Victoria. On Friday we head home to Canberra. It's been a hoot. Can't wait for our next adventure in VANessa (That's our vans name lol)
