I spent the weekend out of town with the Moto X Pure Edition. I went to a car event where there were tons of photo opportunities, so it was a good opportunity to put it through its paces.

The phones feels great, looks great, and it has a nice screen and camera. However, I think it’s going back to Motorola. Why? I’m running into a few issues. On the software side, I’m seeing a lot of animation stutters, laggy scrolling, and general sluggishness. I’m going to give it a wipe and see if that improves it, but I’m a bit disappointed.

The cognac leather back looks great, but the phone is slippery and I always feel like I’m going to drop it. Coming from a Nexus 6, the size is a little less comfortable for me to hold. The speakers work well, and the screen is bright and I had no issues seeing it outside in bright sunlight. Charging performance is amazing, but I found that I needed to charge at least once to make it through the day. I was seeing maybe 2 hours of SOT with 10 hours off the charger.

In the end, the Moto X isn’t the phone for me, but it’s a nice phone if you want something smaller than a Nexus 6 with a good sense of style with mostly stock Android.

I’ll be returning mine and waiting for the Nexus 5X or the larger Huawei Nexus. For now, my Nexus 6 will tide me over.
