The summer-session schedule is out… What do you want to learn?

In addition to my work fixing computers (and all things tech) in the Sarasota / Bradenton area, I also teach “Adult Education” classes through the Sarasota school systems ACE program. Classes are offered at campuses in Sarasota, and also in Venice and North Port. The new summer catalog has just been sent out, and I’m excited to be teaching some old favorites, as well as a couple of exciting new classes.

Most computers in homes and businesses use the Windows “operating system.” I teach several classes in Windows, including “beginner” classes for those who have very little (if any!) experience with using a computer. Don’t worry! You’re among friends and others who are also there to learn the basics. It’s definitely a “no judgement / no question too simple” kind of class. If you need to learn to use Windows right from the most basic concepts, this class is for you.

Brand new this summer session is a class I’m calling The Google-verse. Google is not just the world’s biggest search site on the internet. It also offers a wide range of other services and products, and most of them are free. This class will go in-depth with coverage of Google online data storage, office-style productivity tools and lots more.

Are you a local or online business owner? Maybe you have an online store? Be sure to check out my class that's all about Online Marketing.

Have you upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft Windows, version 10? Or maybe you’ve recently purchased a new Windows-based computer or laptop. Either way, you have a new option when it comes to browsing the internet. It’s called “Edge,” and it’s the new internet-browsing software direct from Microsoft.

For the past several years, Google has been the biggest player in the browser software market with their Chrome browser. It’s got about 60 percent of the market! Now, with the latest version of Windows, Microsoft has really upped their browser “game” with the introduction of their new Edge browser. It’s “baked in” to Windows. If you have Windows 10, you have Edge.

Is it worth making the switch to the new browser? Well, that’s up to you, of course. Me? I really like Edge and the new features it offers users like you and me. Edge includes a great and easy to use system for cataloging “Favorite” sites, creating a reading list and lots more. It’s also FAST, which means websites you surf to load quickly. I don’t know about you, but I find it very, very frustrating to wait for websites to load on my computer as I surf.

I’ve prepared a full printable PDF “handout” - the same one I use in my local Adult Education classes - on the Edge browser. If you would like a copy, just email me at bsklodowski@gmail.com. As always, if you need help with your computer, call us for an in-home or in-office appointment. 941-877-5501.

Latest post to Google My Business page for Sarasota PC Tech Support... "Avoiding Phishing Scams Online"

Sure, we live in Sarasota, and lots of love to spend a little free time fishing. Yet when it comes to computers and the internet, "phishing" is something you really want to avoid!

Online phishing is a specific type of scam, aimed at getting you to voluntarily hand over login credentials to sensitive websites… your bank, your stockbroker, that sort of thing. Once a crook has your login name and password, they can easily transfer money out of your account and into theirs. Old-style robbery meets high-tech scamming.

Typically, a phishing-scam message arrives as an innocuous-looking email. It looks like it's coming from your bank, insurance agent, stock broker, etc. The email will "look" very proper and official and will have some sincere-sounding story about how your private information was lost, damaged or deleted from the company's system.

The email will ask you to visit a website - one that looks very much like the bank or brokerage site you're used to visiting - and ask you to add your login credentials. While this scam has been around for years, it's still very much in use out there on the web.

Legitimate businesses NEVER ask you to log in to a website because "something went wrong" with the company's system. DO NOT respond to it in any way. My best advice: If you see an email from a financial (or other) institution you do business with, CALL the company and ask if the email you received is legitimate. I'd bet big money you'll be told the message didn't come from the company.
