; How big was the crowd at CPA Day in Annapolis? Big enough to spook the Statehouse security detail. As a record crowd of nearly 200 CPAs gathered on the Statehouse steps for a quick photo, a worried security guard — perhaps fearing a well-dressed protest of some kind — approached MACPA Executive Director Tom Hood and asked, “What’s up?” “We’re the Maryland Association of CPAs, just here to meet with our legislators,” Tom explained. The...

With the budget signed into law and tax extenders very nearly signed into law, how will tax season be affected? IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has some answers - and it's not all good news.

The world keeps shrinking, and the role CPAs play in it keeps growing. That much was clear during the 2014 edition of the World Congress of Accountants. Created by the International Federation of Accountants, the WCOA brings accountants and finance pros from around the globe together every four years to exchange views on the issues and trends that impact the profession. This year’s event was held in Rome, and the MACPA’s own Ken Kelly was there. ...

So stoked to be on the agenda for next week's CCH User Conference in Orlando! I'll be talking about how and why to build a personal learning network. Stop in and say hi! Here's a preview of my presentation:
Want to conquer change and complexity? Then you’ll have to out-learn it. On that score, a personal learning network is your best friend. Find out why PLNs are so important — and how to start building your own.

The lame-duck Congress has finally passed a bill that will temporarily extend certain tax breaks all the way through … the end of the year. As in 2014. That’s right. The bill will expire on Dec. 31, 2014. Any further extensions will be the responsibility of the new Congress. Who says our elected officials can’t get anything productive done? Oh, and tax season? I hope you’re not in a hurry to get started. Here’s how Kelly Phillips Erb puts it in F...

For every organization that must comply with the profession’s new revenue recognition standard — and that pretty much means every organization, period — the biggest concern is time. The standard, which was released in May by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board, centers on the recognition of revenue from contracts with customers and “is designed to create greater comparability for financial sta...

Introduction
Since joining the Maryland Association of CPAs in 2000, I have created, co-written and maintained our daily blog, CPA Success; created, written and produced our weekly podcast, CPA Spotlight; and created a series of electronic newsletters that provide our members with monthly headlines and resources in four subject areas (taxation, technology, resources for CPA firms, and resources for CPAs in business and industry).

As editor, I oversee content for both the MACPA's Web site and its bimonthly member magazine, the Statement. My articles about the MACPA and the CPA profession have appeared in Association Management and SmartCEO magazines and have been distributed nationally by the American Institute of CPAs.

My work as a freelance writer draws upon nearly two decades of print and electronic journalism. Much of my writing experience centers on human-interest writing. I especially enjoy writing in-depth features on interesting people or events. Most of the time, my subjects are ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.

Before joining the MACPA, I spent more than a decade as a print and online journalist.
