Custom GPS Maps
I have recently been experimenting with creating custom maps and custom map overlays for my Garmin Montana 650 GPS. The Montana has the ability to store and use multiple map sets. I know that Several other Garmin GPSs also have this capability, but I do not know which specific models.

I have just posted an instruction guide (a Google Doc that can be viewed using the link below) which provides step-by-step instructions on how to create a map overlay using the free JaVaWa software program (link included in the guide). Using this technique you can create a map overlay that displays multiple tracks, routes, or waypoints. These can be displayed, even while you navigate using a route or track.

Why would you need this kind of map overlay? Well one possible use would be to have an overlay that show road segments that you know are unpaved. Another possible use would be an overlay that shows all the roads you have already ridden on (if you are out to explore and ride on some different roads from the ones you regularly ride on). I am certain you can think of some other uses, and if you do, share those ideas as comments below!

The process for creating one of the map overlays is not difficult. I reccomend you print a copy of the instructions and give it a try. If you see any steps that need to be expended upon or clarified, please let me know.

If you find this type of step-by-step guide useful, let me know and I will try to post some additional instructional guides.
