How old should a Bible sound when translated? New blog by Bill Mounce.
This is one of the more interesting questions that is answered in each translation's “Philosophy of Translation.” For example, the NLT reads like a modern book. It is so interpretive that many of the culture expressions are lost; but that is its approach, and as long as the reader understands ...

Not the best choice of words in the NKJV
The Corinthian church is well-known for its factions. Among others, some identified themselves with Apollos and others with Paul (1 Cor 1:12). This makes Paul's admonition in 16:12 quite interesting. “Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him (πολλὰ παρεκάλεσα) to go to you with the ...

Blog on the ordering of Greek phrases
One of the difficult tasks in translation is how to order phrases. In English, we use proximity to connect ideas. Consider the NIV on Rom 1:5. “Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name's sake.” ...

New blog on relative time in a participle
I was asked the other day about the present tense of “undergoing” in Jude 7. “What is the likelihood that Jude believes the inhabitants of Sodom are presently experiencing eternal fire (in Hades for example) — as opposed to having undergone the penalty when fire and brimstone came upon them?” ...

All translations lose some meaning
I just came home from Houston where we were recording Bruce Waltke's class on Psalms for BiblicalTraining.org. We didn't quite finish so I will be traveling to his house in a month or so to finish, so the class should be ready in a couple months. It will be a good companion class to his on ...

When does dividing a Greek sentence cause problems? (Titus 2:3-4)
We have been having a great month in South Africa. Vacationing with some YWAM friends. Teaching the Pastorals in two schools. Visiting two game parks and photographing all the wild animals. It is an amazing thing to sit in a “lorrie” 5 feet from two sleeping lions. Before I get to Greek, ...

What if there is no right English word?
I am currently reading through the New Testament focusing on just one thing: discipleship. Specifically, why should we care about spiritual growth? We've gone through the gate; why should we worry about the path? (The answer, of course, is that, according to Jesus, life is at the end of the path ...

Blog on the adverbial accusative
Wouldn't it be nice if grammar rules were absolute. What if nouns were always nouns, adjectives were always adjectives and nothing else, and adverbs were adverbs and not particles? But that's not the way it is with grammar in general. As I like to say, grammar is analog, not digital.

Just got back from the Evangelical Theological Society's annual meeting, this time in Atlanta. Heard an interesting plenary talk from Wesley Hill on homosexuality. He is a celibate gay man. His book is "Washed and Waiting." One of the points he made is that we should be celebrating strong, personal friendships other than just marriage. Made some interesting points.

For the making of new and fully devoted disciples
Introduction
I enjoy writing and preaching in a way that non-followers of Christ can find out what he is like, and also to encourage believers to grow up and grow deep in Christ.
