Can Walmart do what regulators can't: get chemicals out out of household products and cosmetics? My latest.
Walmart says it will cut down on 10 'high priority' chemicals used in household products on its shelves. But it's keeping mum on what they are – and which products have them – for now

Marc Gunther looks at the manufacturing and regulatory landscape for hazardous chemicals in consumer products. Tomorrow and Thursday I'll take over with detailed looks at what Walmart and Target are doing.
The US continues to permit some chemicals of concern, but these big-box stores are setting stricter policies

I am looking at 100s of pages of what is essentially a first hand account of World War II in Asia from 1937 to 1942. Oh the stories Mel didn't get to tell... Please help me share some of them now. lascheratlarge.com/melville.

Don't forget that disaster resilience hasn't yet been integrated into LEED and other green building standards, even though disasters have a huge impact on sustainability. If you want some different #hurricaneSandy -related reading, check out my April story from +Pacific Standard about this topic. http://www.psmag.com/environment/disaster-resilience-part-of-sustainability-too-40935/. Though it's focused more on earthquakes, the subject applies just as well to hurricanes or other disasters.

Few joys surpass revising a text to a point where the loose threads are snipped, the rough edges smoothed, and the blurry images focused.

Reading Melville Jacoby's address book. One listing reads "stitcher and lapel buttons." Imagine a 25 year old saying "I gotta call my stitch and lapel button guy."
