Facebook is building the web's most impressive walled garden, a billion user Profiles strong. This is unprecedented and unrivaled in the industry. Google tried to do it with Google+, but despite getting hundreds of millions of users signed up for accounts, they didn't get nearly the same number of users filling out detailed Profiles and forming social connections through the network.
This puts Facebook at a tremendous competitive advantage: any new product they want to roll out is instantly available to their billion users and their Friends to start using, sharing, and collaborating.
Google, meanwhile, has a problem: without all of those social connections having been formed, sharing between users can be a pain in the backside. This makes it harder to roll out services and ensure everyone has access to them and can share (when it makes sense to share) with the people who matter.
Consider Google+ Photos: hands down one of the best Photo Storage and Editing suites out there (the latter if only for Auto Awesome), but without your friends and family around, sometimes without them even signed up let alone using Google+, sharing these photos could be difficult, and collaboration impossible.
So what's a Search Engine Company to do? Go back to their roots. That begins with links, and Google is taking an interesting new approach to the link as not only sharable web address, but even as a way to grant access and permissions to users. Even users without a Google account.
