From Quantification to Patterns in Digital Criticism
I would like to continue the examination of fundamental presuppositions, conceptual matrices, which I began in The Fate of Reading and Theory . That post was concerned with how, in the context of academic literary criticism, 1) “reading” elides the distinct...

Shades of the tabula rasa, something’s happening here…
An open letter to Alan Liu concerning the notion of a tabula rasa interpretation which he introduced, though not in his own voice, in “The Meaning of the Digital Humanities” ( PMLA 128, 2013, 409-423). Hi Alan, You know, in a way Stanley Fish anticipated th...

The Computer, the Anthropocene, and the End of the World
Near the end of the previous millennium Francis Fukuyama declared history to be at an end. He did not of course mean that time has stopped or even that there would be no more change. He was speaking of history as conceptualized within a certain intellectual...

Great service, good price. I had problems with my clutch. They replaced it in a day and did some minor repairs; the minor repairs were no charge. When I went to pick up the car, the boss wasn't there to take my money. So they gave me some coffee while I waited a few minutes for the boss to get there (he was out at a junk yard scouting parts).
