Did you know couples can volunteer to mentor a child together? We call them "Big Couples"! Joey and Jenni have been mentoring Little Brother Avante for two years now -- read their amazing story: https://bigmentoring.wordpress.com/2014/12/15/big-couple-joey-and-jenni/
by Megan Russell Joey and Jenni are what we call a “Big Couple”. They chose to volunteer as mentors together to guarantee that at least one of them can see their Little Brother, Avante, each week. ...

Just read this and had to share! When a Little Brother or Sister applies for a BBBS college scholarship, we ask their "Big" to write a short personal statement to accompany their application. Here's one Big Sister's absolutely beautiful statement about her Little Sister Jasmine:

"Jasmine is truly one of the most intelligent people I have been lucky enough to meet. Her incessant curiosity and open mind towards the world leave me in complete awe because I see a lot of myself in her passion, which is why our match has laid the foundation for a lifelong friendship and support system. It is incredibly rare to meet a young woman like Jasmine, who asks a million questions and is always willing to embrace differing views in her attempt to gain some universal clarity.

“Coming into this program, I had zero expectations for my match. I had no idea I would come to treasure and respect and love this person so sincerely and so deeply. Jasmine and I have a lifelong journey ahead of us – as friends, as sisters, as mutual mentors – and any other person or institution could only be blessed to experience her rational intelligence and beautiful perspective.”

You might see the story on KXAN, FOX7 or KVUE today that our office was burglarized over the weekend. Everybody is OK -- and we've been working to repair a couple of broken windows and replace a laptop that was stolen. Thanks to everyone for your patience, the well-wishes and all your support - we truly appreciate it!

Did you see us in the Austin American-Statesman yesterday? They wrote a great article about the need for Spanish-speaking volunteers. We're always looking for more bilingual Bigs! http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/local/local-nonprofits-seek-more-bilingual-and-latino-vo/njHzd/

At this year’s Match Holiday Party, we welcomed nearly 400 Littles and Bigs, 21 event volunteers, 2 sponsors… and a partridge in a pear tree. Every child enjoyed dinner with their mentor, took home a candy goodie bag and also chose a toy. Thank you to BURY, Holiday Inn and all our toy drive participants for bringing holiday magic to so many Littles!

Today is #GivingTuesday and we're celebrating how mentoring changes kids' lives for the better, forever. So, why do YOU support mentoring? If you're a Big, why do you volunteer? Tell us in the comments!!

Big Sister Lauren and Little Sister Elizabeth bond over the simple things, like reading, eating frozen yogurt, and doing homework together. Lauren says she's realized that mentoring is about the little moments they share over time. “The simplest things mean a lot to your Little," she says. "That’s the biggest thing I’ve learned." Read their beautiful story on our blog: https://bigmentoring.wordpress.com/2014/11/06/sisters-bond/

To provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
Introduction
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas volunteers provided 90,000 hours of mentoring to 1,500 Little Brothers and Sisters; the value of this time is nearly $2 million! Even more impressively, last year more than 97 percent of Central Texas Little Brothers and Sisters stayed in school, improved their grades and avoided early parenting.
