Our J1s were visited by Deputy Assistant Secretary Robin Lerner of the +us department of state in honor of +Delaware North at +Shenandoah National Park's selection as an outstanding participant in the J1 program because of glowing reviews from our 2014 J1 participants and the State Department auditors! The auditors said Delaware North went above and beyond the requirements of the program, which offers international students cultural and educational exchange opportunities in the US. If you see any of our amazing J1s in the park this season, be sure to say hi!

Looking for a great way to get your kids hiking? Bring them to +Shenandoah National Park's TRACK Trails for an interactive experience to get them unplugged from their electronics and plugged into nature! Looks like these guys had a great adventure on the Limberlost TRACK Trail this weekend, and must be seasoned TRACK Trail veterans since they had KIP the dragonfly to join in their adventure! Overall, I really liked the whole Big Meadows Lodge experience. We stayed in one of the several "motel" buildings adjacent to the lodge. Room was decent although not completely modern. Nice little "patio" in front of the room with two chairs and a table to sit and view the beautiful scenery of the valley to the west below. Just 50 yards from the Appalachian Trail. Plenty of hiking all over. Nice 2 mile trail down to a medium sized falls is right on the grounds. Great overlook up a short trail at the south end of the parking lot. The lodge is nice and old (approximately 1939). Nice large rustic restaurant with good food, although the service is very slow. Small "tap room" downstairs serves drinks and smaller food items. All the blackberry desserts are great. It has a real "family friendly" feeling, and I felt very comfortable walking around the compound. You feel a part of the rest of the families there. Attended many ranger programs, including the spectacular Perseids meteor shower event. There was no moon, sky was dark and clear, the Milky Way stood out very clearly, and plenty of bright shooting stars accompanied by "oohs and ahs" from the crowd. More exciting than fireworks because the shooting stars are real and you don't know when they are coming. At least one per minute on that night.

Big Meadows Mayhem - I wrote a review but apparently I had too many characters so here is my review in a nutshell. Food at Big Meadows lodge was excellent - tasty and plenty but pricey. Staff very friendly. HOWEVER we had allot of trouble when we arrived w/our reservation which after 1/2 hour the lodge manager managed to fix. We did some local hiking and visited Luray Caverns which was fun. There is allot of wildlife on the premises that are not afraid of humans especially the deer and black bears. What was NOT fun was Mighty Mouse that terrorized my mom and I which was climbing the curtains, running amuck amongst our things which we finally put up on the armoire. I'm not afraid of mice I just don't like the thought of them w/diseases running around the room and onto our stuff. Plus they are protected under the national park so they don't get killed. Front desk sent a heavy broom and 'humane' trap which it knows and avoids. Again lodge manager made good and reduced the cost of our stay. HOWEVER I do not think I'll return.

My family has been coming back to Big Meadows every Labor Day weekend for the past 25+ years. One of my favorite places on earth - the comfort this place provides is not just of body and mind, but of soul as well. The feel of a soft morning fog, the smell from the main lodge fireplace, the sound of your boots on the stone balcony - all of it puts you at ease. Extremely recommended to all - whether a couple looking to kindle/rekindle romance, or any family - regardless of size - wishing to make lasting memories that will endure through generations
