Old Joke, but still funny: The instruction said 'Requires Windows 7 or better'. So I installed Linux. :D

The first Fields Medal won by a woman

It is historically known that the mathematical and scientific fields have long been closed to women or that were not recognized to them the merits won on the field. But I don't want to dwell on such issues in this post.

Women have a lot to say in all areas of knowledge, having amply demonstrated to be brilliant and ingenious. It is recent a beautiful news that brings up the extraordinary ability of a woman: Maryam Mirzakhani becomes first woman to earn Fields Medal for Mathematics in its 78 year history.

Maryam Mirzakhani is also the first Iranian to be awarded the prize, which this year amounts to about $13,700 and is specifically dedicated to her work on the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.

Here is a description of her work>>

Born in 1977 in Tehran, Iran, Maryam Mirzakhani received her Ph.D. in 2004 from Harvard University, where her advisor was Curtis McMullen.

From 2004 to 2008 she was a Clay Mathematics Institute Research Fellow and an assistant professor at Princeton University.
She is currently a professor at Stanford University. Her honors include the 2009 Blumenthal Award for the Advancement of Research in Pure Mathematics and the 2013 Satter Prize of the American Mathematical Society.

Kudos to Maryam Mirzakhani and ad maiora semper!

July Self Portrait Challenge Honorable Mentions

Here are the Honorable Mentions from the "Silhouettes" July Challenge. You can see the Event and all of the awesome submissions here:

The photos attached to this post were considered finalist contenders but were not eligible to win prizes because either they were created by moderators (we play but we aren't eligible to win!) or these photographers have won sometime in the past 6 months. However, because these photos would go into the Finalists pool otherwise, I wanted them to get recognition, and so these are our Honorable Mentions. Well done! (Click to enlarge the photo and see who's tagged in them.)

photos are slightly cropped for the purpose of the mosaic - you can view the originals in the event linked above

Stay tuned to see who the fantastic finalists are…

Thanks to our July prize sponsors +Think Tank Photo,, +SmugMug, +Capturing Couture, & +500px! We love their products and services and appreciate their support. :)

SF/F Art of the Day

Grzegorz Rutkowsku has a lot of very nice art online, much of it with very traditional fantasy subject matter. I particularly like the one below, in large part because of the mountain background and the lighting employed by the artist.
