As the summer comes to an end we wanted to highlight some of the worst, and, in some cases, the most laughable public relations blunders in the financial industry.
 
First let me start by demystifying the coined phrase: “All press is good press.”  No, folks, all press is NOT good press. Negative press coverage may get your name out there, but it doesn’t mean that it positions you or your company as a leader in the industry and it certainly won’t help to drive your business objectives.

At last night’s VMA’s, “feminist” sat written in huge letters on a screen behind Beyoncé, arguably the most popular pop star in the world. This lies in stark contrast to the 2013 VMAs where Miley Cyrus’ performance shocked crowds for her attempts to “twerk.”
 
By proving her feminist credentials, Beyoncé shot the issue of gender equality into the limelight, forcing society to talk about what being a feminist actually means.

For whatever reason, the PR industry as a whole has damaged its own self-image, which is surprising since we’re in the business of managing and shaping the public’s perception of something.  We are trusted advisors, strategists, crisis managers, problem solvers, creative thinkers and yet we settle for “PR girl.”
