Am I obsessive compulsive? Maybe a tiny bit. But if it make me an effective activist, I'm okay with that. Remember, I never insist everyone else should be as extreme as I am. I just want to see what's possible. :-)

Toxic chemicals can affect our kids' health. I found out how, gave a TED talk, made a film and now I'm turning it into an app

We were downwind and had showers of burning cinders rain down on us. Dangerous but awesome. Cool picture. I never had a chance to go inside and down the slide. Or I guess it wasn't enough of a priority.

This is the underside of the wild alien spaceship that held the man that burned at the end of the week... I've never seen a bigger fire in my life!

As people would tour the alien spaceship, the only way out was the slide.  You should have seen people's reactions when +Cliff Baise's son slid out dressed as an alien!   #BurningMan

This is why we can't just clean it all up. We have to stop it at the source.

Ecology Center
2530 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, CA 94702
Among its environmental projects, the Ecology Center has a Plastics Task Force (http://ecologycenter.org/plastics/) to educate people about the problems related to plastics in the environment and human help. They've been super supportive of my own plastic-free projects, and I've given talks there twice. The store has an awesome selection of plastic-free and reusable alternatives.
Quality Excellent

Story
Introduction

In June of 2007, recovering from surgery, I read the article and saw the photo that changed my life.  The article was Plastic Ocean and the photo showed the carcass of a dead sea bird, its belly full of plastic pieces:  bottle caps, cigarette lighters, even a toothbrush.  I looked at my own life and realized that  through my unconscious overconsumption, I was personally contributing the the suffering of creatures I hadn't even known existed.

That week, a new passion and blog was born: My Plastic-Free Life (formerly Fake Plastic Fish).  I've been blogging away ever since, collecting and tallying my own plastic waste and writing about plastic-free alternatives (See my ongoing Plastic-Free Guide) and ways we can do better.  In June 2012, Skyhorse Publishing Company released my first book: Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too.

Sometimes I succeed.  Sometimes I fail.  Sometimes I'm a lot preachier than I mean to be, and afterwards I feel like a jerk.  Really, I'm no different from anyone else who cares about the planet.

Living with less plastic is really not as hard as it seems, but our awareness of disposable plastic in our lives can be transformative.  To that end, I threw down the gauntlet last May and invited Fake Plastic Fish readers to collect and tally their own plastic waste for a week and upload the results to a new Show Us Your (Plastic) Trash web site.  How can we know where we need to go if we don't know where we are to begin with?  Solving the plastic pollution problem will require more than individual personal actions.  But individual actions and personal awareness are essential for creating the kind of world in which we want to live and the impetus to spark bigger action.

I love what the Monterey Bay Aquarium is trying to do for our oceans with their sustainable seafood guide and programs on ocean plastic pollution. I just wish they would get the plastic toys out of the gift shop!

Great that there is a local electronics store in the area that has the tiny parts necessary to fix gadgets when they break instead of having to replace them.

I want to love this place. I really do. But the food is very starchy and leaves me feeling like I've just had a big Thanksgiving meal... and not in a good way. And the cool sounding beverages they list on the menu? They all come in plastic bottles. Please ditch the plastic, Souley Vegan.

Probably the best vegetarian lasagna I have ever had in my life. Just the right size (meaning half as high as most lasagnas), the right combination of flavors, the right amount of cheese, just wow. Also, went there for Sunday brunch yesterday and had the egg and polenta bowl. It was amazing. Plus, they have free wifi and each time I have been there, the staff have been very cool about letting me stay for as long as I want. Unfortunately, the service has been spotty. Some of the wait staff are less attentive than others.

Even though it's a chain, Panera is a good place to buy bread without plastic if you bring your own paper or cloth bag for them to put your loaf in. Don't have them slice it for you if you want it to stay fresher longer.

The owner, Leon Pang, is amazing. If he can fix it, he will and will charge a very reasonable rate. If he can't fix it, he will let you know, and will take the time to explain what is wrong and why it can or cannot be fixed. Once, when my laptop was overheating and I wasn't going to be able to make it to the shop before Leon left for the day, he drove to my house and picked up the laptop on this way home. Then he had it ready for me and all fixed the next day.

Have been spending my weekends here recording the audio version of my book Plastic-Free. The engineer Alberto is really great. Very patient and helpful. The setup is comfortable. They provide water in a glass bottle with a real glass and fresh apple slices.
