Programmable notifications system for Google+ communities, and beyond! (VIDEO about 4 mins)
Imagine a way to tailor messages on Google+ 'to the right people, at the right time...'

Well, this is exactly what we have created!

The quick video will show you a demo of a programmable desktop notification, and 'badging system' to follow soon  - meaning you can e.g. attribute different 'levels of competence' to people in a community, and deliver unique content to specifically them.

It is about you, and your community.
But here is the thing: you will be able to decide how you and your community want to use it (within reason, of course)!
You will decide on the images, the call to action, and where people will 'land' next, as well as 'when' they see it.
It may be a featured article, a 'member of the week', a link to a quiz/test on knowledge, directing people to a YouTube video of the day, a free course at the right level for that person, special 'bonus content', pretty much anything.

Sound good?! We hope so.

As you can see from the video, we have an AWESOME working prototype, but need your help over the coming months...

Request:
Would you like your 'Google+ community'  to be considered for Beta testing? (you'll need to be the owner/moderator)
If so, please let us know now by filling in the  in the Google form below:
http://martinsherv.com/1x
You can also leave feedback on the concept and request additional features.

Timescales:
We are not going to rush a release, so please be patient. Most probably middle of summer 2014.
We want to get it working 100% right for my own communities first and will make sure it is super awesome for you all.

Background and thanks.
Myself and +Ehsan Ahmadi Gharacheh have been working on this for about 9 months now. And I'd like to say a big thank you for all his hard work.
Thank to +Linda Dee and +George Sepich for being the midwives at many of the births of Plusto's characters Don't know Plusto? He is the little robot fella.
Thank you once more to +David Stickney for all his help on the videos.
And thanks to earlier testers; things have really moved on now!
Btw, we called it commoogle as we believe in the power of the Google+ community. Now we have a system that may well help us take things even further...

Thank for your interest and we look forward to hearing what you think!
Are you commoogling? (almost!)

How To Start A Hangout

I decided to create my first ever infographic! And here it is!

Hopefully it will help beginners to GPlus have confidence in starting their very own hangout.   It covers the very basics of How To Hangout on Google Plus.

As you can see below it focused on the Main Options of Invite, Mic, Cam, Bandwidth, Settings, and End Call.  Please pass it on to your friends and family, and business associates who may not have yet started their own hangout before.

You can see a larger version of the infographic on my blog at http://georgesepich.com/how-to-start-a-hangout/.  It also has an embed code that you may copy if you would like to showcase this hangout graphic on your own website.

Thanks to the  entire Google Plus team that makes Hangouts possible, with special mentions to +chee chew +Dori Storbeck +Justine Rivero +Google+ Help

Latest from the Google+ Help community, all in one post.

The 3 Hottest Questions This Week From The Google+ Help Community
Custom URLs, Custom URLs (yes, twice) and Photo upload settings...

Hello there Google+! Well, this week they've let me loose on the Google+ Help Weekly Round-Up - and what a week it has been.
And I think there is one thing on everyone’s lips... Destiny's Child - Say My Name

This week's winner is, undoubtedly the name of the game!
1. Yes, 'Custom URLs'.
To start us off, in the Google+ Help community +Nathan Coast asked "I have a custom URL but my wife has not been offered one yet. Can anyone shed any light here? Is this a staged rollout?"
We can just imagine the conversations in that household whilst the wait was on, but all is well as +Troy Chapman said it is a "staged rollout this week." http://goo.gl/ZakNIE
And being a very good plusser he added..."the message was relayed to me by +Corrie Davidson [from Google] in another post."
Q&A here: http://goo.gl/eEAIWJ
As you may expect, there have been a few more questions on this topic too…

Most popular Topic number 2 is...

2. Custom URLs once again (yes, so good I named it twice)
+Theo Hordijk asked "If i change my google + URL to this nice and short version, will I have to change all the links related to Authorship? i.e. will i have to change all the rel=author related links pointing to my old google + URL?" And +Ayoub Khote jumped in with " No, your old numerical URL will forward to the new one, so no changes will be needed." http://goo.gl/VRrI04 Q&A here: http://goo.gl/KsFv9C

Next, +Aviva Pinchas asked "Is there any way to specify or request what the URL will be?" and +Ayoub Khote was on the ball again…."sorry, but there is no option for requesting a different custom url at this time. If you are unhappy with this process, please send Feedback (in the left-hand drop down menu). The team looks at each and every piece of feedback sent in, and the more feedback they get on a particular topic, the more this becomes a priority."
Q&A here: http://goo.gl/lJghb6
Then Ayoub adds a tip - type a @ sign outside of a text entry area to bring up feedback. Handy ;)

Next up in the number 3 position we have…
3. Photos and settings
+Catherine Kleinke asked "How do I make all my photos private especially when it is being automatically backed up?” To which +Eric Cochran promptly answered "When auto-uploaded (like from your phone), photos are automatically made private. Only you can see them until you choose to share them."
Good answer! http://goo.gl/UVLupo Q&A here: http://goo.gl/5xdai1
And on another thread +Kamal Tailor pointed people to his post here: http://goo.gl/kmEkyU for fully info on auto-backup.

► Tip of the Week
Ashley Olson says, “I know there's a way to make your phone ring anybody know how to do it? I can't figure it out again! Thanks”
+Nathan Lunsford "...have someone call it?" (well done sir)
Or on a slightly more Google+ Help note: here is a lovely little post from +Ronnie Bincer on the new hangouts interface: http://goo.gl/uv5OHz
If you haven’t tried them yet, then give them a go! It is just like you are ‘in the room’ (so please wear pants).
► Bonus Tip of the Week
Seeing as so much of the week we’ve chatted out custom URLs, here is another great post from +Jaana Nyström that discusses it some more, including the question of an ‘umlaut’ and even has pretty pictures: http://goo.gl/lCA83W

There we go! I told you they were brave letting me have a go at the update. Until the next week when you will be in the hands of the very capable +Robert Wallis...

p.s. I missed the + off the graphic to see if any of your noticed and checking your read this far ;)

Searchplunk is beginning soon!

An experiment: will you stay number one in Search?

For the past few weeks 30 brave SearchPlunkers have been in training. Today is the day for which they’ve been waiting! (Sounds very ‘Doctor Who’, doesn’t it?)

Here is a link to watch the event - starting at 2pm EST: http://youtu.be/cW-2JjeGBwU
NOTE: please comment on THIS post, not the event or elsewhere with your answers...(see below).

Front end disclosure:
And this is an experiment about the number one spot of Google (read the article to understand more).
The attached post is currently number 2 or 3 in Google Search (read the article to see how this is/isn't important) and let’s face it, being number 2 or 3 is embarrassing considering the title :P
As such, I have developed this game to engage the Google+ community; in turn, we will see whether the engagement we generate through this social activity will create a ‘lift’ in Search.
I am looking for a story when I talk at the Social Media Marketing World conference in San Diego end March, and this could well fit the bill!

Are you ready to play?
It is set up as follows…
Top line: full quote
Next line: stripped out version
Ratio: number of ‘FAILS’: number of ‘PASSES’

Will you stay, number one or will you get ‘SearchPlunked!’

Your job: choose 3 words from each phrase that stay #1 in Search i.e. you will have five sets of three words in total.

Plausible impossibilities should be preferred to unconvincing possibilities.
Plausible impossibilities should preferred unconvincing possibilities
3: 17 (super easy!)

What's the first thing ghosts do when they get in a car? Buckle their sheet-belts!
first ghosts car Buckle their sheet-belts
14:6 (average)

Great content is okay, but it’s so much more enriched by nurturing the community who gathers around it. If you support that community, you earn the opportunity for a marketplace.
enriched nurturing community gathers support opportunity marketplace
26:9 (average)

Ask yourself this question CONSTANTLY: where can I add the most value to what matters most to me and the people who care about me?
Ask yourself question constantly most value matters people care about
117:3 (tough)

The difference between PR and social media is that PR is about positioning, and social media is about becoming, being and improving.
difference between PR social media about positioning becoming being improving
119:1 (gulp)

What you may find out?
This is a bit of fun to start spotting how content/phrases create a unique message to Google Search that ‘that’ is the same result as the entire quote.

Once we end the game play I will give access to the extensive spreadsheets so you can do your own research on this subject. As you will see, it has been a lot of work.
