This weekend +Jaason Englesmith and I continued the tiki-fying our dining room.

We painted and wallpapered all of our white cabinets, replaced the silver and glass chandelier over the table, and hung shelves for our mug collection.

Potential future updates may include replacing the white plastic chairs around the table, adding a rug, replacing or "plussing" the fireplace screen, replacing the decidedly nautical painting above the fireplace with something more tropical, adding fake foliage to the skylight chasm (not pictured).

Any other suggestions?

Perhaps, but I think that there's a difference between hateful people using a symbol and a symbol becoming a symbol of hatefulness itself.

Till ALL Are Free
Today is my country's "Independence Day" which I've always, like Thanksgiving, viewed with some cynicism. This country is the leader in animal product production, meaning, by default, we enslave, torture, and murder more beings than any other. And on this day where we celebrate our independence from oppression, we will grill the dead bodies of animals who never knew any freedom, never had any independence of their own and lived in a state far worse than any human has ever experienced. To me, this is offensive in the highest degree: celebrating freedom with enslavement, personal rights with the bodies of those denied every right. Not to mention the means by which we got our freedom: on the blood of the native people of this country, who were doing a far better job with it than we have. The Native Americans were decimated and continue to struggle today. I have Cherokee blood in my veins and mourn that I never got to connect more with my heritage. For me, however, the main issue is and always remains the animals. NO ONE has had it worse than they. And how DARE we speak of freedom and independence whilst biting into their desecrated bodies.

Man... Tokyo Disney is the best...
Disney fans might disagree which Disney Resort reigns supreme. Everyone has their favorite. But there is one thing we can all agree on: None can surpass Tokyo Disney for handwashing.

There are lots of Christians out there who are like you and support marriage equality for everyone, right?  This post doesn't make them seem foolish because there's no foolishness to call them out on.

I would say that 90% of the so-called Christians out there who ARE speaking out against gay marriage are foolish.  They are hypocrites because they try to force others to follow this one biblical law while at the same time they aren't following the other ones.  The foolishness lies in that hypocrisy, and this post just stands to illustrate that.

Recently did a Tiki bar crawl across the bay area, and this was definitely the best place we went to. It had all the quality and ambiance of Smuggler's Cove, but without all the obnoxious drunk hipsters. The music is spot on, and the decor really makes it feel like you're outside on a tropical getaway. The drinks were great, with much care given to quality ingredients and presentation. Of all the tiki bars in the area this is the I plan to spend the most time at.

Nice little beach bar right in the middle of downtown. The staff really cared about tiki and the history behind the cocktails they serve. They were attentive and friendly. The drinks were good, but the only food served was from the italian restaurant downstairs which didn't really mesh with the tiki vibe. The music played was a mix of exotica and Elvis, with some other beachy tunes thrown in as well.

I love Ike's. It's so great to have really good sandwiches with phenomenal vegan options, but also things on the menu that meat eaters can drool over.

We sat in the lounge and had some drinks and snacks while looking out at the great view of the marina. The decor is really well done. It feels very much like you're eating in the home of a wealthy sea explorer. The food was quite good, but they could really benefit from some more vegetarian options. The drinks were also very good and it was fun to read through the menu. The staff was friendly and attentive but didn't seem very knowledgeable about the drinks. We also over heard one waitress describe the restaurants trademark menehune to another customer as "some sort of hawaiian voodoo doll." I feel like that kind of basic inaccuracy is indicative of a lack of interest in the company's history. Other than that I thought it was a great experience.

Amazing. The drinks were outstanding (nearly all rum-based, but still creative and unique). You can tell the owners and employees really care about what they're doing. The decor is absolutely fantastic. It really feels like you're in the hull of an old pirate ship. If I didn't know better I'd say I felt like I was actually swaying with the motion of the ocean... though that was probably just the effects of the rum. The music played was appropriately exotic and relaxing. The only problem I have with Smuggler's Cove is that it's arguably too popular for it's own good. There was a line outside, which took us about a half our to get through, and once inside it was hard to really relax because of how noisy the other patrons were. Still giving it 5 stars because the worst thing about it is that it's so popular. ;-)

The decor and atmosphere are the only redeeming quality of this once great tiki lounge. I'm glad that it's still around as a landmark, but I do wish they would embrace their heritage more by eliminating the terrible music played by the talented band and replacing it with more "island" appropriate music. The drink quality was also sub-par and they didn't even offer signature souvenir mugs. Just standard off-the-shelf kind of stuff. The food was expensive and basic chinese take-out quality (with the exception of the Taro dumplings which were still expensive but at leas they were unique and tasty). I'm glad I went here to experience the legend... I just wish it was still as legendary as it once was.
